{"id":32186,"date":"2022-07-25T23:33:57","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T23:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/07\/25\/2-americans-including-a-veteran-killed-while-fighting-in-ukraine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:58:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:58:26","slug":"2-americans-including-a-veteran-killed-while-fighting-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/flashpoints\/2022\/07\/25\/2-americans-including-a-veteran-killed-while-fighting-in-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"2 Americans, including a veteran, killed while fighting in Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: This <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/25\/us-medic-killed-in-ukraine-didnt-go-there-to-be-a-hero\/\"><i>story<\/i><\/a><i> was first published in the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/\"><i>New York Post<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/22\/2-americans-die-in-donbas-region-of-ukraine-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\">two Americans killed<\/a> in a Russian tank ambush in Ukraine \u201cdidn\u2019t go there to be a hero,\u201d according to his parents \u2014 who repeatedly begged him to come home from the war zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medic Luke Lucyszyn, a dad of two dubbed \u201cLuke Skywalker\u201d by the Ukrainians he was helping, was injured by Russian shelling on Monday last week, his <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02JvZECqq4ypE7RRSK7b9BgMHL9mxX1rqqd5igMEXaQAYbYVUAagpacHSH74JAFhg6l&#038;id=100029429642731&#038;m_entstream_source=timeline\" target=\"_blank\">commander, Ruslan Miroshnichenko, confirmed online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When others tried to rescue him, they were ambushed by a Russian tank \u2014 killing Lucyszyn along with at least three other foreign fighters, including 51-year-old American veteran Bryan Young, the commander said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucyszyn, 31, felt compelled to help because his father, George Lucyszyn, is a Ukrainian now living in North Carolina, the dad <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=COvr3wkGAlY\" target=\"_blank\">told NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \u201che didn\u2019t go there to be a hero. He was there because he wanted to help people,\u201d his mother, Kathryn Lucyszyn, told the station, insisting they \u201ctried to dissuade him\u201d from going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery time I talked to him, I said, \u2018Why you just come home?\u2019\u201d his dad recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fighting back tears, the medic\u2019s grieving mom recalled how \u201cjust a week before he was killed, he kept sending us notes saying, \u2018Mom, we don\u2019t have the right equipment.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even asked for her to \u201csend me a tactical vest,\u201d recalled the mom, who said they were awakened last Tuesday at 4 a.m. by officials from the US State Department with news of their crushing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young\u2019s wife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/amp\/news\/ukraine-russia-war-americans-killed-luke-lucyszyn-bryan-young\/\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed to CBS News<\/a> that the Californian was the other American confirmed dead in fighting. They were killed alongside a Canadian and a Swedish fighter who were also ambushed while trying to rescue Lucyszyn in the Donbas region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a series of tributes online, Miroshnichenko said he had been \u201chonored to be their commander. It hurts so much to lose these boys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told CBS News that Lucyszyn \u2014 and all those who served alongside him \u2014 had been deserving of his \u201cStar Wars\u201d nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a good side and evil side \u2014 they fight for good,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled once asking Young why he had put his life on the line for another nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe replied, \u2018Sir, if we Americans don\u2019t help you win this war, the next step of Russia will be knocking on our doors,\u2019\u201d he recalled of the California veteran\u2019s response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least two other American volunteer fighters have been killed in Ukraine and two others have been captured by Russian forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/06\/21\/army-vet-killed-fighting-in-ukraine-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Zabielski<\/a>, 52, was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/21\/american-stephen-zabielski-killed-fighting-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">killed in May<\/a> in the village of Dorozhnyanka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, after stepping on a landmine. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/04\/29\/marine-veteran-killed-fighting-in-ukraine-relatives-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Willy Joseph Cancel<\/a> Jr., a 22-year-old Marine veteran, was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/28\/former-us-marine-willy-joseph-cancel-killed-in-ukraine-after-signing-up-to-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">killed in Ukraine in April<\/a>, according to his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alexander Drueke, 39, and Andy Huynh, 27 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/06\/15\/2-us-veterans-a-marine-and-a-soldier-reported-missing-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">both U.S. military veterans from
