NATO statement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2021\/06\/14\/nato-leaders-declare-china-a-global-security-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">declared Beijing a \u201csecurity challenge,\u201d<\/a> saying China is actually a force for peace but will defend itself if threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese news release said the NATO statement was a \u201cslander on China\u2019s peaceful development, a misjudgment of the international situation and (NATO\u2019s) own role, and a continuation of the Cold War mentality and organizational political psychology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO allies joined the United States on Monday in formally scolding Beijing as a \u201cconstant security challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2021\/06\/14\/nato-leaders-declare-china-a-global-security-challenge\/\" said were its \u201ccoercive policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington has singled out China as a particular threat, especially in the South China Sea, where it has built and militarized artificial islands, as well as over its attempts to intimidate self-governing Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory to be annexed by military force if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese mission said Beijing\u2019s spending on its military is considerably less than that of NATO members and it accused the organization of conjuring up a military threat from China in order to justify its own agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China will \u201cnever give up the right to maintain peace but unswervingly defend our sovereignty, security and development interests,\u201d the mission said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link message in sync with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/15\/biden-rallies-nato-support-ahead-of-confrontation-with-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. President Joe Biden\u2019s calls to confront Beijing <\/a>on China\u2019s trade, military and human rights practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a summit statement, the leaders said that China\u2019s goals and \u201cassertive behavior present systemic challenges to the rules-based international order and to areas relevant to alliance security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders expressed concern about what they said were China\u2019s \u201ccoercive policies,\u201d the opaque ways it is modernizing its armed forces and its use of disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the Chines mission said Beijing\u2019s military was purely for defensive purposes and its military modernization was <\/a>was still more than a fifth less than what NATO countries spent combined. Observers say China spends more than it says on its military by not declaring costs for new weapons and other programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO countries also maintain bases around the world and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/06\/15\/reagan-carrier-strike-group-heads-into-south-china-sea-for-first-time-during-2021-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201csend their aircraft carriers all over the place<\/a> to display their military might,\u201d the Chinese mission said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also referenced the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Serbia in 1999, which killed three state media journalists. NATO has said that was the result of faulty targeting but most Chinese believe it was a deliberate attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a flight operations, maritime strike exercises, and coordinated tactical training between surface and air units while in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission also said China\u2019s nuclear arsenal is 20 times smaller than that possessed by NATO, and that it would never be the first to use such weapons or use them against non-nuclear nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will not pose a \u2018systemic challenge\u2019 to anyone, but if anyone wants to pose a \u2018systemic challenge\u2019 to us, we will not sit idly by,\u201d the mission said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO should \u201cexpend more energy on advancing dialogue and cooperation, and do more things that are truly conducive to maintaining international and regional security and stability,\u201d it
