Shelby Yoakum, chief of the Readiness and Plans Division at Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operation at Dover Air Force Base, led this year\u2019s three-week recovery effort at the glacier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said they might have only several more years of searching the glacier before the debris field calves into the lake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we can all safely say that there are still remains out there that have yet to melt out of the ice, and that we will be back for at least the next few years to continue this mission, especially since we have not identified all 52 that passed away,\u201d Yoakum said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/10\/08\/two-airmen-killed-in-1952-crash-in-alaska-identified\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635799223922792436-operation-colony-glacierjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Two airmen killed in 1952 crash in Alaska identified<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two more of the 52 service members\u00a0who were killed in 1952 when a C-124 Globemaster II crashed in Alaska have been identified, the Air Force announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last area they found remains this year was about 656 feet (200 meters) from the toe of the glacier, where the ice falls into the lake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials could not say when all the remains and debris from the glacier would be lost to Lake George.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe reality of the situation is all of the debris and the remains are constantly falling to crevasses, big and small, and moving down to the toe of the glacier faster than some,\u201d said Army Staff Sgt. (Mark Thiessen\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonja Anderson-Dell of Tampa, Florida, continues to lobby for the families of the nine service members whose remains haven\u2019t been found, even after her own journey had closure.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, she waited for the military to identify the remains of her grandfather, Isaac Anderson, who was 21 when the plane when down.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years of attending services for others whose loved ones were on the plane and laid to rest, in late 2018, she received word her grandfather\u2019s remains had been found. A memorial service was held the following May.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was overwhelming,\u201d she said by telephone Friday. \u201cI finally got to see it. I\u2019ve been to so many services and to now have my grandfather come home \u2014 very emotional for myself and for my father.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She plans to continue being an advocate for the families but says some may never get their loved ones.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that in my heart there may be one or two because it just may
