The Guardian Angels at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, have formed their own unit: the 57th Rescue Squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stood up on <\/span>Feb. 18, the unit has a total of <\/span>35 pararescuemen, combat rescue officers, and survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists, said Maj. Patrick Gruber, 57th Rescue Squadron commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The airmen come from the 56th Rescue Squadron, also based at Lakenheath, which will retain its maintainers and pilots for HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, Gruber said in a Feb. Jan. <\/span>20 interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The airmen in the 57th Rescue Squadron are known as Guardian Angel airmen because their mission is to retrieve a <\/span>downed pilots or other isolated personnel, often in the middle of a <\/span>battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We can’t always count on the survivor that’s out there \u2014 the isolated personnel \u2014 to be able to come to us, whether they are stuck in the aircraft that has crashed, whether their parachute is hung up in a tree, whether they are down at the bottom of a ravine or collapsed in a structure or floating out in the middle of the ocean.
