Those installations began to purchase and use the equipment in the past few years using local unit funds, said Sarah Fiocco, another Air Force spokeswoman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force officials could not immediately say which installations were using the body-worn cameras. The policy change was first reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AFamnncosnco\/posts\/141951718053243\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force amn\/nco\/snco<\/a> Facebook page on Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no specific incident that caused the new policy, Fiocco said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, as questions began to arise about how to use funds and the equipment and store the data, higher headquarters began to look into the issue, Air Force officials said. It ultimately was determined there was no DoD-wide policy on body-worn cameras, no clear need justifying the use of them and numerous policy complications created by their use. As a result, the Air Force decided that those installations using them would have to stop and get rid of the equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such devices have been instrumental in some civilian criminal justice cases, especially those regarding use-of-force as in the case of Floyd. Video obtained from the body-worn cameras of Minneapolis police played a key role in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of murder and manslaughter in the killing of Floyd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Body-worn cameras \u201care both beneficial and cost effective,\u201d NPR reported, citing a recent study by public safety experts and world economists. Those findings were published in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/20533586-cl_bwc-study\">research paper released<\/a> by the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Council on Criminal Justice\u2019s Task Force on Policing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/26\/982391187\/study-body-worn-camera-research-shows-drop-in-police-use-of-force\" target=\"_blank\">show the key benefit of body-worn cameras is the reduced use of police force<\/a>,\u201d Jens Ludwig, professor and head of the Crime Lab, told NPR. \u201cFor example, among the police departments studied, complaints against police dropped by 17 percent and the use of force by police, during fatal and non-fatal encounters, fell by nearly 10 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The support of police body-worn cameras is mixed, however, with some cons pointing to issues of privacy and storage of evidence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force officials say no similar reduce of force need exists in the flying branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe service a gated military community with an extremely low rate of law enforcement incidents that does not currently present a need for a non-DoD required or resourced body camera system,\u201d Stefanek said. \u201cHowever, Department of the Air Force installations have cameras at key and critical locations that serve multiple purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the moment, there is no specific plan for how to dispose of the equipment and footage, Stefanek said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll body camera equipment will be disposed of in accordance with Defense Logistics Agency military equipment disposition procedures,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re currently looking into the appropriate disposal method for the footage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, other federal agencies or even local law enforcement may take the equipment, Stefanek said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Air Force is ordering all installations whose security forces use body-worn cameras to stop using and dispose of the equipment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":60224,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":67,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":{"2":{"categories":["your-military","news","left-column","home","middle-column","disaster"],"primary_category":"your-military"}}},"categories":[101,23,24,88,89,16,26,67],"tags":[],"coauthors":[3237,3392],"class_list":["post-34355","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news-roundup","category-disaster","category-home","category-left-column","category-middle-column","category-news","category-newsletters","category-your-air-force"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"Q7DSKGKD7ZBRDJOXKT52B6ZESQ","arc_canonical_url":"\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/07\/23\/the-air-force-is-ditching-security-force-body-cams-heres-why\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) -
