Phillip Breedlove, head of U.S. European Command and NATO supreme allied commander, said\u00a0that ISR has been a key component to support operations against the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, as well as\u00a0for missions in U.S.\u00a0European Command,\u00a0Africa Command and\u00a0Central Command.<br\/><br\/><br\/>But the increased use of ISR is still &#8220;less than 10 percent&#8221; of EUCOM&#8217;s requirement, Breedlove said.<br\/><br\/>In addition to the unmanned aircraft already in use,\u00a0&#8220;EUCOM needs additional intelligence collection platforms, such as the U-2 or the RC-135 to assist the increased collection requirements in the theater,&#8221; Breedlove said in his <a href=\"http:\/\/eucom.mil\/media-library\/article\/35164\/u-s-european-command-posture-statement-2016\">written testimony<\/a>\u00a0before the Senate Armed Services Committee. \u00a0<br\/><br\/>The demand for Air Force ISR has been on a steady increase\u00a0in recent years, especially in light of sprouting terrorist organization like ISIS.<br\/><br\/>For example, in December, the service announced that enlisted airmen would be able to fly the RQ-4 Global Hawk for ISR missions \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/12\/17\/air-force-have-enlisted-pilots-first-time-since-world-war-ii\/77490376\/\">first enlisted pilots since World War II<\/a>. The Pentagon has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/12\/01\/air-force-hiring-contractor-pilots-sensor-operators-and-maintainers-reapers\/76624190\/\">started contracting<\/a> with private businesses to conduct daily flights.<br\/><br\/>For fiscal 2017, the Air Force is planning to buy 24 new MQ-9 Reaper drones, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/capitol-hill\/2016\/02\/09\/number-rpa-flights-remain-stable-us-air-force-budget-says\/80072772\/\">budget documents<\/a>.\u00a0The aircraft is expected to replace the MQ-1 Predator, which the service plans to start phasing out over the course of 2017.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the same conversation continues.\u00a0Last year, Breedlove lamented over limited ISR because of higher demand in more robust theaters like CENTCOM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;ISR is always short,&#8221; Breedlove <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/capitol-hill\/2015\/02\/27\/air-force-leaders-surveillance-demand-house-hearing\/24123897\/\">said last February<\/a>. &#8220;Yes, I could use more ISR.
