That\u2019s a small drop from last year\u2019s selection rate of 18.8%, and nearly 3 percentage points lower than in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those chosen for chief spent, on average, just over three years as a senior master sergeant and nearly 21 years in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/12\/12\/air-force-selects-518-airmen-for-promotion-to-chief-master-sergeant\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chief-select-2020.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force selects 518 airmen for promotion to chief master sergeant<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A total of 2,763 Air Force senior master sergeants were eligible, for a selection rate of 18.75 percent.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force also tapped nearly 40 guardians for promotion to two of the service\u2019s highest enlisted ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten senior master sergeants were chosen for promotion to chief master sergeant, or more than one-fifth of the 45 who were eligible. That\u2019s eight more than were picked in the first board for chiefs in December 2020 \u2014 and 37 more guardians who were eligible \u2014 as the Space Force grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another 29 master sergeants were selected for E-8, or about 11% of 259 eligible guardians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On average, the rising E-9s spent nearly four years as senior master sergeants and over 21 years in service, the Air Force said. Incoming senior master sergeants have spent almost three and a half years as master sergeants, and nearly 17 years in the military, on average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afpc.af.mil\/Portals\/70\/documents\/PROMOTION\/Enlisted%20Promotions\/21E9_21S9_22S8_%20Promotion%20Select%20List.pdf\">Read the full list of those selected for promotion here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space Force personnel issues are causing some friction on Capitol Hill as the service tries to build out its leadership, too.
