Oklahoma, caught fire while performing touch and goes in Nebraska and was forced to make an emergency landing Thursday night, according to the Air National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crew of six onboard the four-engine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2017\/07\/20\/boeing-awarded-awacs-support-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing E-3 Sentry<\/a> airborne early warning and control system plane safely exited using the slide, according to an Air Guard news release. No one was injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft, assigned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/14\/tinker-cracks-down-on-tool-checkouts-after-lapses-lead-to-impounded-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">552nd Air Control Wing<\/a>, was performing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/09\/16\/acc-plans-to-be-training-more-then-training-better\/\" target=\"_blank\">the routine training<\/a> when an engine fire warning light came on shortly after 7 p.m., according to the news release. While it\u2019s not unusual for the warning light to come on, actual engine fires are rare, the release stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/05\/nebraska-air-guard-gets-1st-female-commander\/\" target=_blank>Nebraska Air National Guard<\/a> fire department responded to the emergency within 30 seconds and put out the fire within 45 seconds, according to the release. The engine kept smoking, but the fire team smothered the smoke within minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was almost like a training exercise, where everyone does everything perfect,\u201d said Scott Osander, assistant fire chief, in the release. \u201cThey extensively train on situations like this, and they did what they were trained to do. They aircraft crew members onboard the plane did everything correctly in this situation, landed, handed it over to us, and then we did what we were trained to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Williams, a crew chief with the Nebraska Air National Guard\u2019s fire department, said the emergency reinforced the training the firefighters already do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to simulate a fire, but we annually train on simulated aircraft fires \u2026 doing this training makes this second nature,\u201d Williams added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI trust them completely,\u201d Osander said. \u201cIt is my job to direct the operations and truck placement and I did not have a lot to do. This team set up on the aircraft just like they are trained to do, they hit the fire and the rescue team got out and pulled the hand line. While they were doing that, another guy checked on the aircrew. Everyone was doing it exactly like they were supposed to. It makes me proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft was towed to a safe location for an investigation into the cause of the fire. The aircrew was transported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/05\/02\/air-force-increases-estimate-to-repair-and-rebuild-offutt-to-420-million\/\" target=_blank>Offutt Air Force Base<\/a> in Nebraska.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Air Force AWACS aircraft out of Tinker Air Force Base.
