But some advocates of the aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/savethea10\/posts\/890070904424717\">are wary of the progress<\/a>, given the\u00a0Air Force&#8217;s new proposal\u00a0to begin divesting the aircraft as early as 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Budget <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/Portals\/1\/documents\/FY17_POM_Force_Structure_Map_v15_for_Distro.pdf\">documents from the fiscal 2017 request<\/a> show the Air Force plans to begin moving out A-10 squadrons in increments between 2018 and 2022<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span> &#8220;to make room for\u00a0F-35 squadrons standing up,&#8221; <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">over that time period, <\/span>Air Force officials told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is just a request\u00a0so nothing can be made formal without <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">C<\/span>congressional approval,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The annual request, called the Force Structure Action plan,\u00a0also calls for other aircraft to move\u00a0to bases where the A-10 once hailed from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the document shows Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, would be one base to\u00a0phase out of 27 A-10s by\u00a02018; the base would replenish their inventory instead with 27 F-16s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force also plans to remove 24 A-10s by fiscal 2019 from overseas contingencies in the Pacific, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1125\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635913125829791173-fy17-pom-force-structure-map-v15-for-distrojpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635913125829791173-fy17-pom-force-structure-map-v15-for-distrojpg.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635913125829791173-fy17-pom-force-structure-map-v15-for-distrojpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635913125829791173-fy17-pom-force-structure-map-v15-for-distrojpg.jpg?resize=768,576 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635913125829791173-fy17-pom-force-structure-map-v15-for-distrojpg.jpg?resize=1024,768 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The Air Force&#8217;s FY17 Force Struction Action plan proposes that A-10s leave the flight line sooner than 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Air Force<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a deployment standpoint, the service\u00a0has been providing\u00a0theater security package rotations,\u00a0or TSP,\u00a0of A-10s\u00a0in two- to five-month increments for missions such as Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, as well as to Europe under Operation Atlantic Resolve to reassure partners and allies under a resurgent Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve A-10s and airmen with the 75th Fighter Squadron from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/10\/20\/-10s-deploy-turkey-fight-isis\/74288250\/\">deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey<\/a>, in October for missions against the Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s likely the\u00a0battle over how the Air Force can phase out the Warthog will reemerge if members of Congress disagree with the FY17\u00a0plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If there were any lingering doubts about the continued value and effectiveness of the A-10, one only need to look to Syria where the A-10 is taking the fight to ISIS, to Europe where the A-10 is assuring allies, or to the Korean peninsula where the A-10 is deterring aggression,&#8221;\u00a0Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When the Obama Administration submits its 2017 budget request in the coming weeks, I hope it will follow through on its plan to keep the A-10 flying so that it can continue to protect American troops, many still serving in harm&#8217;s way,&#8221;\u00a0Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a strong A-10 advocate, said after it was announced the A-10 would survive its &#8220;premature&#8221; retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials are hoping the transition\u00a0plan\u00a0proposed in the new budget, however, &#8220;will allow us to maintain vital fighter capacity as we transition to the F-35 and deal with a resurgent Russia and a protracted counterterrorism war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria,&#8221; Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said in a release on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal for the Air Force is to declare\u00a0the F-35&#8217;s\u00a0initial operational capability between August and December 2016.
