John Hyten told lawmakers Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That equates to a readiness rate of a little less than 10 percent of the 62 Lancers the Air Force reported it had in fiscal 2018. That is far less than the 51.75 percent mission-capable rate reported for B-1s in the official mission-capable rates for 2018, suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/03\/28\/air-force-grounds-entire-b-1-fleet\/\" target=_blank>B-1s are in much worse shape<\/a> than previously known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/19\/air-force-reveals-risks-bravery-behind-b-1-emergency-landing-and-blown-hatch\/\" target=\"_blank\">issues in the B-1<\/a> because we\u2019re just beating the heck out of them, deploying them, deploying them,\u201d Hyten told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his nomination hearing to be vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. \u201cAnd so we had to pull back a little bit and get after fixing those issues, and the depots can do that if they have stable funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hyten said that five of those mission-capable B-1s \u2014 which he called \u201cthe workhorse of the Air Force today\u201d \u2014 are split between Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota and Dyess Air Force Base in Texas. Another is a test aircraft, Hyten said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifteen additional B-1s are in depots for maintenance, Hyten said, and the remaining B-1s \u201care down for a variety of discrepancies and inspections\u201d at Ellsworth and Dyess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2019\/04\/17\/overtasking-b-1-lancer-fleet-led-faster-deterioration-general-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com reported in April<\/a> that Air Force Global Strike Command head Gen. Timothy Ray told reporters that the service had \u201coverextended\u201d the B-1 in deployments to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, or the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/07\/26\/aircraft-mission-capable-rates-hit-new-low-in-air-force-despite-efforts-to-improve\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cover1-0729.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Aircraft mission-capable rates hit new low in Air Force, despite efforts to improve<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force\u2019s aircraft readiness continued its multi-year slide in fiscal 2018, as the overall mission-capable rate for the aging fleet dropped below 70 percent \u2014 its lowest point in at least six years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, Ray said, the Air Force would commit about 40 percent of a particular bomber or other combat aircraft to deployments, not counting aircraft in depot maintenance, Military.com reported. Instead, he said, the Air Force has committed 65 to 70 percent of its B-1s for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the wear and tear on the crews, the maintainers, and certainly the airplane, that was my cause for asking us to get out of the CENTCOM fight,\u201d Ray said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House Armed Services seapower and projection forces subcommittee warned in June that B-1 readiness was in dire straits. In their markup of the House\u2019s version of the fiscal 2020 defense policy bill, the lawmakers said the United States\u2019 long-range strike capabilities \u201cmay be placed at increased risk by aging structural problems with the B-1,\u201d and that the Lancer wasn\u2019t getting the resources and attention it needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That subcommittee said the number of fully mission-capable aircraft had fallen into the single digits, and B-1 aircrew were being diverted to other aircraft because there aren\u2019t enough Lancers for the training they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has grounded the B-1 fleet twice recently \u2014 once last June, and again in late March \u2014 over problems with its ejection seats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We\u2019re just beating the heck out of them, deploying them, deploying them,&#8221; Gen.
