They tuned out the barbed-wire fences and the watchful eyes of the guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was on these days that young <a href=\"https:\/\/goairforcefalcons.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/taven-birdow\/8438\" target=_blank>Taven Birdow<\/a> might daydream of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/01\/31\/atlanta-falcons-ben-garland-academy-grad-and-air-guardsman-wins-nfls-salute-to-service-award\/\" target=_blank>playing in college<\/a> just like his father, who, in those precious moments, was reliving his time as a linebacker for Oklahoma State University in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jermaine Birdow was no longer No. 33 in your program but No. 463462 in Oklahoma&#8217;s state prison system \u2014 serving a long sentence for a 2001 home invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also on these days the elder Birdow might daydream of seeing his son \u2014 now a senior fullback at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/10\/03\/us-air-force-academys-oldest-falcon-mascot-dies\/\" target=_blank>the Air Force Academy<\/a> \u2014 play in person for the first time. That happened on Aug. 31 against Colgate, when Jermaine was in the stands as Taven took the field in the number he used to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment was even better than he imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo see his last name on the back of his jersey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/06\/26\/trump-reverses-rule-for-military-academy-athletes-who-want-pro-careers\/\" target=_blank>playing for the United States Air Force<\/a> for the first time?\u201d said Jermaine , who has attended every game this season following his release last November after more than 17 years in prison . \u201cI was awestruck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taven was 3 when his father was jailed for his role in a home invasion in Oklahoma City. Jermaine ended up pleading guilty to charges that included robbery with firearms, pointing a firearm at another, kidnapping for the purposes of extortion and first-degree burglary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sentence: 37 years (later commuted to 20 with the help of his legal team).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a kid, Taven and his mom, Jamie Rodrigues, would visit his father as often as they could and at whatever prison he happened to be housed. Jermaine was locked up in a dozen or so different Oklahoma prisons during his incarceration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rodrigues always made sure Taven&#8217;s father played a big part of his life. (AP Photo\/David Zalubowski, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There were times when I crawled into bed and cried,&#8221; said Rodrigues, who lives in Altus, Oklahoma, and works as a budget analyst. &#8220;But how can I ever complain, when I have a child who did as much as he did, accomplished as much as he did and never once complained?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the visits, the father and son would sometimes throw the football around (if there was one). Or play hoops (if they were permitted). Or make up obstacle courses (trash cans for hurdles). Or just talk across a table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they always envisioned they were beyond those walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was pretty good as far as creating an atmosphere of, &#8216;You&#8217;re not here in this prison. You&#8217;re just here with your dad,'&#8221; said Jermaine, who resides in Enid, operates a lawn service and gives motivational speeches at churches and schools. &#8220;It was always the presence of just us that made the time greater.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, Taven and his mom would travel three or more hours for a visit only to be turned away because of ever-changing rules or surprise facility lockdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those times stung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So did goodbyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember once when I was 7 or 8 and we had to leave, and I had an anxiety attack,\u201d said Taven, a management major who just applied to be a pilot. \u201cHe was a loving father and couldn\u2019t be there, and all those short stints of being with him takes a toll. You get to go home and he has to go back to his cell. That\u2019s a lot on a child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/off-duty\/military-sports\/2018\/08\/27\/air-force-players-bond-with-brother-grows-through-adversity\/\" target=_blank>Their bond was enhanced<\/a> through sports. Taven played baseball, wrestled and ran track. Of course, there was football as he helped Altus High School win a 2015 state title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No bitterness toward dad. Taven attributes that to his mom, who always included his father in decisions. She grew up without a father and wasn&#8217;t going to let that happen to Taven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One strict rule: Grades came first. No exceptions. And if Taven got into trouble, his mom made him call his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He did the normal dad role \u2014 when he could,&#8221; Taven said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jermaine weighed in throughout Taven&#8217;s college recruiting process. He was a standout football player himself in high school, before suiting up for Oklahoma State. Taven was thinking of stepping away from football. When he told his mom, they drove to Tulsa, where his father was incarcerated, so the three could have a heart-to-heart chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;His dad was saying, &#8216;I&#8217;m getting out, and I&#8217;ve never seen you play football. I&#8217;ve always wanted to be there for a game,'&#8221; his mom recalled. &#8220;Taven broke down. It&#8217;s the first time I&#8217;ve ever seen him break down. He said, &#8216;You should&#8217;ve been there in high school.&#8217; We both lost it. We realized how much he internalized on a constant basis. We had no idea, because he&#8217;s the most humble person I&#8217;ve ever known.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, dad got to see him play in person. Taven even had a season-long 41-yard run in that game against Colgate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;First time I cried in a while,&#8221; the 43-year-old Jermaine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More feel-good moments \u2014 traveling to Hawaii to watch Taven. Seeing him rush for a career-high 124 yards against San Jose State. Being there at Navy when he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for his career. On the horizon, a bowl game for a 7-2 Air Force team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s proud of the relationship he&#8217;s forged through prison walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, we\u2019re here,\u201d Jermaine said last weekend before the Army game, glancing in the direction of the mountains. \u201cYou look around and you\u2019re like, \u2018Wow. This is awesome. This is just beautiful.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Jermaine will have another opportunity to watch Taven play when Air Force takes on Colorado State today at 5 p.m. in Fort Collins, airing nationally on ESPN2. <\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air Force Falcons fullback Taven Birdow was 3 when his father, Jermaine, was jailed for his role in a home invasion in Oklahoma City.
