{"id":35571,"date":"2018-12-02T17:35:19","date_gmt":"2018-12-02T17:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/02\/new-helo-masks-will-better-protect-against-chemical-radiological-attacks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:09:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:09:28","slug":"new-helo-masks-will-better-protect-against-chemical-radiological-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/12\/02\/new-helo-masks-will-better-protect-against-chemical-radiological-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"New helo masks will better protect against chemical, radiological attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has rolled out a new, updated mask for helicopter air crew members that the Air Force says will better protect airmen in case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/31\/second-fort-bragg-soldier-to-receive-soldiers-medal-for-helping-after-humvee-accident\/\" target=\"_blank\">chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear<\/a> attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Joint Service Aircrew Mask-Rotary Wing, introduced in November, replace the old Aircrew Eye and Respiratory Protection System for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2018\/08\/17\/after-flying-beyond-their-service-life-air-force-pave-hawks-are-finally-getting-replaced\/\" target=\"_blank\">HH-60G Pave Hawk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/2016\/09\/14\/air-force-gets-ball-rolling-on-uh-1n-huey-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\">UH-1N Huey<\/a> helicopters, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center said in a Thursday release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force officials said it will provide \u201cvastly improved\u201d eye, skin and respiratory protection, and is compatible with night vision goggles. Brackens said 978 masks have been fielded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old masks limited air crew\u2019s ability to perform their mission, and the new ones have been well-received by airmen, Lt. Col. William Holl, the center\u2019s CBRN defense systems materiel leader at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the new masks were sent to the field, teams from the CBRN defense joint program executive office and Air Combat Command trained aircrew flight equipment personnel on how to size and fit them, and conduct preventative maintenance checks. They trained the air crew themselves about how to properly wear and use the masks. As of Thursday, the fielding teams had trained about 100 aircrew flight equipment personnel, and about 75 air crew.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Air Force has rolled out a
