{"id":36080,"date":"2018-05-23T18:37:48","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T18:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/23\/4200-soldiers-risk-cut-in-housing-allowance-if-they-dont-take-action-now\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:39:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:39:37","slug":"4200-soldiers-risk-cut-in-housing-allowance-if-they-dont-take-action-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/home-hq\/2018\/05\/23\/4200-soldiers-risk-cut-in-housing-allowance-if-they-dont-take-action-now\/","title":{"rendered":"4,200 soldiers risk cut in housing allowance if they don\u2019t take action now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 4,200 soldiers have until June 5 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/09\/02\/soldiers-must-make-sure-their-paperwork-is-up-to-date-or-risk-losing-bah-cash\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">update paperwork<\/a> regarding their dependents, or their housing allowance at the \u201cwith-dependents\u201d rate will end, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For five years, the Army has required supporting documentation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/2018\/05\/01\/benefits-basics-your-housing-allowance\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Basic Allowance for Housing <\/a>(BAH) at the \u201cwith-dependents\u201d rate. The documents must be filed in the Army\u2019s personnel records management system, iPERMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at Human Resources Command and Defense Finance and Accounting Service have been working with units to make sure soldiers update their records. The Army has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2016\/09\/22\/140000-soldiers-must-update-records-or-risk-losing-bah-cash\/\">warning soldiers <\/a>about the requirement for months. In September 2016, out of 315,000 soldiers drawing BAH at the \u201cwith-dependents\u201d rate, about 140,000, or 45 percent, were missing documents in their files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of May 21, all but about 4,200 soldiers had updated their records. Officials sent out a message in January that soldiers had until March 1 to submit the documents, but they\u2019ve extended the deadline to June 5, officials announced May 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deployed soldiers will receive an exception to the policy: They must submit the documentation within 60 days after any post-deployment leave, or risk having their allowance reduced, officials noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, soldiers are required to submit a new DA form 5960 to their S1 or human resources professional, to be scanned into iPERMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a soldier\u2019s BAH is reduced, the \u201cwith-dependents\u201d rate will be restored once the soldier\u2019s documents are loaded into the system. They\u2019ll also receive any back pay they lost, officials stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army must prove that every soldier is entitled to all the payments they receive,\u201d said Mike Mensch, policy proponent for HRC\u2019s Army Soldier Records Branch, in a statement about the extended deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese reviews are needed to confirm current pay entitlements and help ensure Soldiers\u2019 personnel records are complete,\u201d Mensch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMissing records can have a major impact on Soldiers\u2019 benefits and pay when they separate or retire from service.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soldiers have until June 5 to
