Mohammadi\u2019s wife and their year-old son narrowly escaped injury in the attack that shocked the coastal tourist town.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2017\/02\/08\/soldier-welcomes-afghan-translator-to-u-s-with-bear-hug\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap17039643193862.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Soldier welcomes Afghan translator to U.S. with bear hug<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A soldier welcomed his Afghan interpreter to the United States on Wednesday after buying him a plane ticket to ensure his quick arrival amid concerns the Trump administration might try to expand its travel ban to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police have found no evidence that Nicolopoulos, whose last known address was Tacoma, Washington, committed a hate crime, said Lt. Jerry Palmer of the Lincoln City Police Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know his mindset. We have no idea what his motivations were, or his mental state, other than that he was under the influence,\u201d Palmer said. One of the charges Nicolopoulos is facing is drunken driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group that monitors anti-Muslim discrimination and hate crimes, however, is calling for a more thorough investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven the unprecedented rise in anti-Muslim hate incidents in recent years &#8230; we urge law enforcement authorities to look into possibility of a bias motive in this,\u201d Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohammadi served in combat zones with US forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe survived that, and came here and had this happen,\u201d Hooper said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack happened on March 6 in the parking lot of a Walgreens drug store off coastal Highway 101.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, Nicolopoulos\u2019 car hit Mohammadi\u2019s Toyota Prius. Mohammadi and his wife Nelab Sarabi got out to inspect the damage and exchange insurance information, leaving their son inside, when Nicolopoulos drove into their car again, according to an affidavit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, Mohammadi was hit, and was pinned by Nicolopoulos\u2019 car to his own car door. Nicolopoulos\u2019 car reversed and crashed into the Prius again before driving away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police found Nicolopoulos\u2019 license plate embedded in the Prius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re used to seeing crashes, but for an individual to deliberately, for whatever reason, to decide to use his vehicle as a weapon makes everybody wonder what this person\u2019s mindset was and what drove him to do this,\u201d Palmer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohammadi, who was flown to a hospital in Portland, described seeing his attacker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe airbag was in his face, but he was very relaxed. At that time, I thought, \u2018This is an attack. It\u2019s not an accident,\u2019\u201d Mohammadi told the Lake Oswego Review, a newspaper in the Portland suburb where he works in a food market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors amputated Mohammadi\u2019s leg about 6 inches below the knee, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/z3eeaq-this-family-needs-our-help\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">GoFundMe page raising funds for the family<\/a>. As of Friday, more than half of the $100,000 goal had been raised. Many of the commenters thanked Mohammadi for his service to the United States and wished him a speedy recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicolopoulos, 68, is in the county jail on $1 million bail. He has been assigned a court-appointed attorney, who did not respond to a phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicolopoulos has had numerous run-ins with the law in Washington state, including a case in which he pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in 2001 and another in which he pleaded guilty to malicious mischief in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
