Yokota in total will see\u00a0&#8220;an influx of more than 20 fighter aircraft, F-22s and F-16s,&#8221; in coming days,\u00a0U.S. Forces Japan spokesman Lt. Col. Kenneth\u00a0Hoffman told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These deployments enhance our ability to fulfill our treaty obligations to defend Japan and promote stability throughout the region,&#8221; Navy Capt.\u00a0Jeff Davis, director of defense press operations at the Pentagon, said\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This training is not in response to or in anticipation of any regional concerns,&#8221; Hoffman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials would not confirm the exact number\u00a0of each aircraft; the number of airmen associated with each rotating\u00a0squadron was\u00a0also unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/pacific\/f-22-raptor-stealth-fighters-arrive-at-yokota-f-16s-en-route-1.389804\">reports Thursday said<\/a> the F-22 fighters\u00a0belong to the\u00a0525th Fighter Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska; the F-16s en route to the Asia-Pacific region hail from the\u00a018th Aggressor Squadron, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrival of the aircraft comes\u00a0weeks after\u00a0North Korea&#8217;s highly-contested claim that the country tested a hydrogen bomb.\u00a0Senior diplomats from the U.S., Japan and South Korea <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/01\/16\/japan-us-south-korea-work-strong-warning-north-korea\/78895940\/\">concurred in a meeting in Tokyo Jan. 16<\/a>\u00a0the need for a strong response in the U.N. Security Council to North Korea&#8217;s recent nuclear test, fearing that a &#8220;failure to send a clear message would risk further provocations by Pyongyang.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Ash Carter in a phone call with Republic of Korea Minister of National Defense Han Min-koo on Jan. 6 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/01\/06\/after-north-koreas-nuke-test-28000-us-troops-wait-see-what-happens-next\/78363184\/\">echoed similar sentiments<\/a> saying North Korea&#8217;s actions were a &#8220;flagrant violation of international law&#8221; and both sides pledged to &#8220;coordinate appropriate alliance responses to these provocations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter urged the importance of close coordination with the international community and regional partners in condemning North Korea&#8217;s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And other drills continue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearby in Guam, two U.S. Navy destroyers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/01\/21\/us-navy-japan-war-games-guam-shinzo-abe\/79125144\/\">are conducting war-game exercises<\/a> with about half a dozen Japanese ships, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve F-16 fighter jets are set for a mid-January deployment\u00a0to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam,\u00a0for similar security operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the United States and five allied nations will participate in exercise Cope North at Andersen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three-week-long exercise is &#8220;designed to enhance multilateral air operations of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Japan Air Self-Defense Force and Royal Australian Air Force,&#8221; according to a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea, the Philippines and New Zealand will also participate this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exercise will include more than 930 U.S. airmen and sailors, and more than 900 allied service members.
