The Air Force said it also needs to fly lower in portions of Mountain Home airspace in northern Nevada and eastern Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/10\/16\/mountain-home-fighter-jets-could-fly-lower-in-idaho-nevada-and-oregon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5503721.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Mountain Home fighter jets could fly lower in Idaho, Nevada and Oregon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Air Force wants to fly supersonic fighter jets at lower altitudes in lightly populated areas of southwestern Idaho, northern Nevada and southeastern Oregon to better simulate combat conditions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has started work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/04\/06\/idaho-residents-file-suit-to-stop-mountain-home-from-using-their-cities-for-close-air-support-training\/\" target=\"_blank\">a low-level and supersonic flight expansion proposal<\/a> and is in the development phase of the National Environmental Policy Act process. A draft Environmental Impact Statement analyzing potential impacts of low flights and sonic booms is not expected until next winter or spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Idaho public meetings in the Boise, Grand View and Mountain Home presented a general expansion plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/06\/08\/air-force-disputes-lawsuit-to-stop-urban-training-in-idaho\/\" target=\"_blank\">additional changes to Idaho airspace<\/a>, Air Force officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 366th Fighter Wing said in an email that current flight level restrictions inhibit aircrew ability to become proficient in low-altitude tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WildLands Defense Public Lands Director Katie Fite said the proposal should be a major cause for concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is happening in some of the most important country anywhere for the protection of wildlife,&#8221; Fite said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sonic booms and low flights could stress sensitive animals such as bighorn sheep and sage grouse, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We know noise affects wildlife,&#8221; Fite said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military continues to ask for expansions at Mountain Home, gradually expanding its footprint, Fite said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fite wants flight noise reduced rather than increased, while emphasizing that the forthcoming environmental impact statement needs to include wildlife
