Gen. Steven Kwast\u2019s<\/a> first year as head of Air Education and Training Command has seen the launch of an ambitious experiment to train pilots using virtual reality, a sweeping overhaul of enlisted professional military education that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/04\/26\/air-force-scraps-course-14-15-distance-learning-requirement-for-airmen\/\" target=\"_blank\">scrapped its old distance learning courses<\/a>, and an all-hands-on-deck effort to root out the cause of a rash of hypoxia-like events that has repeatedly grounded its T-6 training aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Kwast approaches his second year, he\u2019s planning to accelerate the rollout of the Air Force\u2019s revised \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/07\/18\/air-force-broadens-pme-eligibility-drops-time-in-service-requirement\/\" target=_blank>Continuum of Learning<\/a>.\u201d He hopes the new system will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/16\/virtual-skies-air-force-hopes-fun-tech-transforms-pilot-learning\/\" target=_blank>make it easier for airmen to learn<\/a> and manage their career development, at their own pace, by giving them on-demand, online access to resources on training, education and experience, on any mobile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a cultural change,\u201d Kwast said in a July 23 interview at AETC headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas. \u201cThis is the mobile airman. It is the environment where every airman can go mobile, and move at the speed of the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuum of Learning will do more than steer airmen to YouTube-like videos on how to change a tire on an F-35 \u2014 though those kinds of tutorials will be part of it. It will put airmen in touch with instructors and fellow airmen in their community \u2014 such as maintainers working on the same aircraft \u2014 to help them brainstorm solutions to on-the-job problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/24\/enders-game-meets-air-force-the-service-is-working-on-a-video-game-to-find-potential-recruits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AIR-pilot-training-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Ender\u2019s Game\u2019 meets Air Force? The service is working on a video game to find potential recruits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The next generation of fighter pilots might be found behind a joystick \u2015 or, at least, that\u2019s what the Air Force is gambling on.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can help airmen steer their own development, away from a \u201clinear\u201d system where training schedules and requirements are dictated to airmen, by letting them learn as fast or as slow as they need, Kwast said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUltimately, you are in control,\u201d Kwast said. \u201cYou can become anything you want, based on how aggressively you want to learn and how aggressively you want to adapt for any world you want to go into. Nothing is mandatory. (Sean Worrell\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s nothing more insulting and demotivating than to have a kid who is a world-class cyber hacker go into a program that says, \u2018OK, we\u2019re going to dumb you down for two years,\u2019\u2009\u201d Kwast said. \u201c\u2018Here\u2019s a 1, here\u2019s a 0, and here\u2019s Fortran and the test is in six weeks.\u2019 And they are six light years ahead of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, the Air Force hopes to create a culture of life-long learning. But, while already-gifted airmen are skipping ahead to educational programs that truly challenge them, they\u2019re not skipping the \u201cinculturation\u201d process by which they learn to be an airman and warriors. It will also have a series of downloadable apps, including apps tailor-made for different bases that can tell airmen about everything from social events for teens to gate closures to emergencies such as an active shooter, Kwast said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beta test for Continuum of Learning\u2019s online \u201cecosystem\u201d began in May, Kwast said. For several months, testers tried to wring it out, break and find out what its limits are. The system could reach a new stage this fall when it folds in those lessons learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Pilot training goes virtual<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force reached a milestone Aug. 3 when it graduated the first 13 students from its Pilot Training Next program, a cutting-edge combination of virtual reality, artificial intelligence and biometric tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those students pinned on their wings in four months, far less than the full year a traditional undergraduate pilot training program takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kwast said the second Pilot Training Next class will begin in January 2019. When they\u2019re finished, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein will review the data from the two classes and decide whether this kind of a training model could be used throughout the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Solving the hypoxia mystery<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kwast also said that after intensive reviews of the \u201cunexplained physiological events,\u201d such as hypoxia, that caused dangerous breathing problems for multiple T-6 Texan II pilots and led to multiple groundings, the Air Force is finding more clues and coming closer to solving the problem once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the safety investigation board at Edwards Air Force Base in California discovered that the proportion of oxygen in the air sometimes fluctuates more than intended while T-6s are flying. Kwast stressed that isn\u2019t the only issue the board discovered, and that it is not clear that the fluctuation is actually causing or contributing to the problems. It could also be a combination of factors working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, Kwast said, it\u2019s likely the root cause will be announced within the next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re finding insights that we did not know before, that will help us understand what\u2019s going on and give us a pathway to solving the problem permanently,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re getting close.
