{"id":38060,"date":"2019-05-21T19:33:42","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T19:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/21\/f-22s-intercept-russian-fighters-bombers-off-alaska\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:10:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:10:38","slug":"f-22s-intercept-russian-fighters-bombers-off-alaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/05\/21\/f-22s-intercept-russian-fighters-bombers-off-alaska\/","title":{"rendered":"F-22s intercept Russian fighters, bombers off Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Air Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/03\/27\/air-force-eyes-langley-eustis-as-new-f-22-training-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-22 Raptors<\/a> intercepted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/01\/27\/us-canadian-fighter-jets-scramble-to-escort-russian-bombers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russian fighter and bomber aircraft <\/a>near Alaska on Monday, officials with North American Aerospace Defense Command said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were two groups of Russian aircraft that entered the Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, a NORAD official told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne group penetrated the ADIZ north and proceeded south, the other penetrated south and proceeded north. The intercept concluded at approximately 2100-2400 mountain time,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers were intercepted by two F-22s. A second group of two more Tu-95s and two Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets were intercepted later by two more F-22s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An E-3 Sentry airborne early warning and control aircraft provided overall surveillance during the intercepts, NORAD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace during the encounter, though they did enter the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends approximately 200 miles west off Alaska\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ADIZ requires aircraft to identify themselves to civil and military air traffic controllers due to national security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NORAD also posted a series of pictures from the encounter, which are relatively normal in the region. For instance, NORAD intercepted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/12\/10\/russia-sends-2-nuclear-capable-bombers-to-venezuela\/\">two Russian Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers<\/a> in January, and U.S. aircraft patrolling in Eastern Europe are frequently intercepted by Russian jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/02\/27\/northern-border-with-canada-not-southern-is-what-worries-norad-leaders\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5120725-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Northern border along Arctic, not southern, is what worries NORAD leaders<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The top officer at U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command warned lawmakers about growing Russian and Chinese interest in the Arctic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pictures posted by NORAD also appear to show the F-22s with external fuel tanks, which would increase the radar signature on what is normally a stealthy, fifth-generation aircraft. That appendage helps to increase the F-22\u2032s time in flight and can help Russian aircraft spot the fighter jet, which isn\u2019t always a bad thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During intercept missions, U.S. aircraft aren\u2019t necessarily attempting to sneak up on an aircraft, but instead are focusing on escorting the adversary safely and professionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NORAD official would not comment on the radar disposition of the F-22s: \u201cWe do not disclose tactical details such as that due to operational security reasons,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force Gen. The Air Force\u2019s fleet of roughly 180 F-22s are an integral part of the U.S. military strategy to defeat high-end adversaries, but using the aircraft for alert missions saps them from their primary training goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOperational squadrons in Alaska and Hawaii have F-22 pilots sitting alert in order to address the 24-hour per day alert commitment,\u201d a Government Accountability Office study from July said, noting the massive time consumption required of the alert mission. \u201cWith no other operational Air Force fighter
