Each squadron will take charge of 24 aircraft. An additional six jets will be available as backup inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has been working on the plan for nearly three years. When Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm, largely destroyed the base in 2018, the Air Force relocated 46 F-22s to other Raptor installations. But instead of opting to bring F-22s back home, the federal government opted to design an \u201cinstallation of the future\u201d that could accommodate its newest fifth-generation fighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/08\/06\/f-35-fighter-jets-coming-to-tyndall-air-force-base\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/48000724056_d5b62a5ae2_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">F-35 fighter jets coming to Tyndall Air Force Base<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Trump administration is confirming that a U.S. Air Force base in the Florida Panhandle that was devastated by Hurricane Michael will be rebuilt so it can house F-35 fighter jets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service considered, but ultimately decided against, bringing four F-35 squadrons, or 104 total aircraft, to the installation, according to the Air Force\u2019s March 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.f-35wingandmq-9wingeis.com\/internal\/documents\/Record%20of%20Decision%20(ROD)\/F-35%20ROD%20F-35A-MQ-9%20Wing%20Beddown%20EIS.pdf\">basing decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdding F-35 squadrons at Tyndall ensures airmen will continue to have a strategic advantage as the 325th Fighter Wing enhances fighter training and combat readiness,\u201d wing commander Col. Greg Moseley said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service officials chose Tyndall to house the advanced fighters because of its infrastructure, airspace, and quality of life for its personnel. Much of that infrastructure is being rebuilt as part of an overhaul slated to cost nearly $5 billion over five to seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the area\u2019s vulnerability to hurricanes and sea level rise along the Gulf of Mexico, Tyndall enjoys prime real estate for high-end, live-fire training at the 130,000-square-mile Gulf Range Complex that stretches over the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe airspace surrounding Tyndall is a national treasure,\u201d Moseley said. \u201cThe type of training conducted here integrates the DOD\u2019s most advanced aircraft and builds a dynamic force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/12\/24\/air-force-touts-tyndall-repair-progress-after-receiving-pot-of-money-for-disaster-relief\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1142305056.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force touts Tyndall repair progress after receiving pot of money for disaster relief<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Thanks to the June 2019 Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act, Tyndall\u2019s annual Operations and Maintenance budget was increased by 450 percent in the final quarter of fiscal 2019.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A three-squadron F-35A wing at Tyndall would bring around 2,200 personnel to the base, including 169 officers and 1,931 enlisted airmen, the Air Force said. About a dozen Defense Department civilians and nearly 90 base support personnel would join as well. USAF anticipates nearly 3,000 dependents, about half of whom are children, would accompany those employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe F-35A wing would fly an average of 47 sorties per flying day, with each sortie lasting approximately 1.4 hours \u2026 during 260 flying days per year,\u201d the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fighter jets would generate the same or less noise as the F-22s that preceded them, the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force leaders haven\u2019t made a final decision on where to permanently base Tyndall\u2019s F-22 Formal Training Unit, and are studying the potential environmental impacts of a move. The training unit could relocate to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., or continue operations from both Tyndall and nearby Eglin AFB, Fla., 325th Fighter Wing spokesperson Capt. Sarah Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The planes were divided up across Langley. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, after the hurricane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is also debating whether to bring MQ-9 Reaper drones to Tyndall or Vandenberg AFB, Calif.
