{"id":38129,"date":"2018-03-28T17:54:35","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T17:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/28\/air-force-academy-cadet-helps-save-downed-pilot-and-suicidal-man-in-one-week\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:07:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:07:35","slug":"air-force-academy-cadet-helps-save-downed-pilot-and-suicidal-man-in-one-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/03\/28\/air-force-academy-cadet-helps-save-downed-pilot-and-suicidal-man-in-one-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force Academy cadet helps save downed pilot and suicidal man, in one week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/16\/air-force-academy-first-sergeant-admonished-for-microaggression-email\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Air Force Academy<\/a> cadet talked a suicidal man off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/01\/30\/congressman-trying-to-save-small-colorado-air-force-squadron\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado<\/a> overpass and located a downed aircraft in California in two unrelated events within a 72-hour time span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cadet 3rd Class Jack Bell, a licensed pilot, was flying a Cirrus SR-22 aircraft with his brother, sister and a fellow cadet toward <a href=\"http:\/\/installationguide.militarytimes.com\/speaker\/presidio-of-monterey\/#.Wru21i7wZhE\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Monterey, California,<\/a> Feb. 18 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/05\/07\/moving-up-airmen-in-these-hot-careers-are-advancing-and-fast\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">air traffic control<\/a> notified him that a plane in his area had fallen off radar and gone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/movies-video-games\/2014\/10\/07\/major-sponsor-drops-dual-survival-star-teti-fires-back-at-critics\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">radio silent<\/a>. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last transmission from the plane\u2019s pilot was that it had an engine failure, according to an Air Force Academy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usafa.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/1473247\/72-hours-cadet-saves-suicidal-man-assists-finding-crashed-plane\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After receiving the last known coordinates of the lost plane, Bell flew over the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUp in the air, everyone is a fellow airman,\u201d Bell said in the release. \u201cSo it wasn\u2019t even a second thought for me. &#8230; I had to find a small hole in the clouds that I could punch through and do a little tactical spiral descent to get down below the cloud layer and head toward the location we were given.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2017\/08\/17\/all-male-air-force-academy-singing-group-reaches-semifinal-round-of-nbcs-americas-got-talent\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"143\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Air-Force-singers.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">All-male Air Force Academy singing group reaches semifinals of &#8216;America&#8217;s Got Talent&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An audience vote moved the officers-to-be into the next round.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After flying to the area, Bell managed to locate the plane in a California coastal mountain range. His passengers were able to peer out their windows while Bell flew circles around the downed aircraft. The pilot had survived, and his wings and fuselage appeared intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell radioed those observations back to the air traffic control tower, helping first responders find the crash site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not more than 72 hours later, on Feb. 21, Bell was driving along a Colorado interstate when he noticed a man standing along the ledge of an overpass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was something that obviously looked out of place, so I pulled over,\u201d he said. \u201cI could tell this guy wasn\u2019t doing okay, and something wasn\u2019t right. (U.S. Air Force photo\/Mike Kaplan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell called 911 and asked for assistance before moving toward the man and making small talk with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI asked him, what do you plan on doing up here?\u201d Bell said. \u201cThat\u2019s when he kind of snapped out of it and realized what he was doing and got very emotional. That\u2019s what he went there to do, and he was ready to act upon those intentions.
