{"id":38614,"date":"2016-05-09T20:40:26","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T20:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/05\/09\/air-force-f-22s-wrap-up-european-deployment\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:14:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:14:30","slug":"air-force-f-22s-wrap-up-european-deployment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2016\/05\/09\/air-force-f-22s-wrap-up-european-deployment\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force F-22s wrap up European deployment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dozen F-22s from Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, have returned stateside after almost a month of exercises throughout Europe, according to a base spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12\u00a0Raptors, one of the largest contingents of F-22 fighters to deploy to the region, arrived at\u00a0RAF Lakenheath, England, in early April, two of the jets and about 20 airmen\u00a0then made their way east to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania, as well as\u00a0\u0160iauliai Air Base, Lithuania.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> Tyndall deployed 12 jets, one of the largest contingents of F-22 fighters to the region;\u00a0however, only two jets and around 20 airmen\u00a0made their way from Lakenheath onward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European l<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">L<\/span>eaders touted the presence of the\u00a0Air Force&#8217;s most sophisticated aircraft<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> and its presence in the region, saying it \u00a0because\u00a0it demonstrated how &#8220;t\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The United States is honoring its commitments and is ready to protect our region with all the most modern measures,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/ArticleDisplay\/tabid\/223\/Article\/744405\/f-22-raptors-fly-into-lithuania-as-part-of-european-tour.aspx\">Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskait\u0117<\/a> said on April 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countries close to the borders of Russia have become increasingly <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">been <\/span>apprehensive<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ly<\/span>\u00a0since Russia\u00a0annexed<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ation of<\/span> Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to\u00a0reassessing their military strategies, they&#8217;ve been begging the U.S. to send more forces, and, indeed,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">divisions\u00a0ever\u00a0since the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.\u00a0<\/span>Russia&#8217;s resurgence has <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">even <\/span>forced Washington to rethink troop levels in Europe, eyeing a larger, permanent force that would help deter <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">an unexpected fight with <\/span>Russian aggression<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> forces<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s likely the Air Force will move forward with more <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">with <\/span>quick deployments to the region<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0for this reason,<\/span>. The so-called\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">known as <\/span>&#8220;Rapid Raptor&#8221; deployments\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to <\/span>move <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">a lot of 5<\/span>fifth-generation jets &#8220;into an area without a lot of spin-up&#8221; but enough to\u00a0make its mark, Maj. Justin Anhalt, an F-22 requirements officer and program element monitor, told Air Force Times <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on <\/span>March 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">In August, the Air Force <\/span>The first deployment of <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">deployed four <\/span>F-22s to Europe came last August as part of the\u00a0European Reassurance Initiative,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for the first time ever as part of the European Reassurance Initiative \u2014 <\/span>a Pentagon effort designed to allay European partners&#8217; fears.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> about Russian aggression in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even sending two Raptors\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> to\u00a0Sending two F-22s <\/span>to Europe<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, for example,<\/span> is much more likely to generate\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">make <\/span>headlines than a handful of F-15s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a big deal, because you have a tactical asset that also makes a strategic effect,&#8221; Anhalt\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During their most recent deployment, the F-22s worked to\u00a0&#8220;maximize training opportunities, affirm enduring commitments to NATO allies, and deter any actions that destabilize regional security,&#8221; according to U.S. European Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important we test our infrastructure, aircraft capabilities\u00a0and the talented Airmen and allies who will host these aircraft in Europe,&#8221; said Gen. Frank Gorenc, the commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, at the beginning of the aircraft&#8217;s deployment. &#8220;This deployment advances our airpower evolution and demonstrates our resolve and commitment to European safety and security.&#8221;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,&#8221; he said at the beginning of the aircraft&#8217;s deployment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deployment to Romania put the Raptors right along the Black Sea, where Russian jets have been increasing their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2016\/01\/30\/russian-jet-buzzes-us-air-force-spy-plane-over-black-sea\/79563912\/\">intercepts of\u00a0U.S. and allied aircraft<\/a> and ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Air Force has not said whether it will send F-22s back to Europe in the near term for more exercises, however, the service is intently focused <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">steadfast <\/span>on\u00a0&#8220;advancing air-to-air threats \u2014 emerging air-to-air threats \u2014 that will challenge both the U.S. ability to gain and maintain air superiority, and our coalition partners and how we can help them out,&#8221; Anhalt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oriana Pawlyk covers deployments, cyber, Guard\/Reserve, uniforms, physical training, crime and operations in the Middle East and Europe for Air Force Times.
