David Schmitz&#039;s death have come to light in a federal civil lawsuit filed by his wife against three defense companies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news comes on the heels of a federal civil lawsuit in South Carolina District Court that argues defense companies Lockheed Martin, Collins Aerospace and Teledyne Technologies may have installed counterfeit electronic components on an ejection seat that malfunctioned during a fatal fighter jet crash in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lt. David Schmitz, an F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, was killed during a botched nighttime landing in June 2020 when his ejection seat failed to deploy a parachute. He successfully ejected from the cockpit but died on impact with the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force spokesperson Rose Riley said the fraud investigation is separate from the lawsuit brought by Schmitz\u2019s widow, Valerie.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/11\/02\/department-of-justice-forces-30m-from-northrop-for-fraudulent-costs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_9893.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Department of Justice forces $30M from Northrop for fraudulent costs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Northrop contractors overcharged the government between 2010 and 2013, the Department of Justice has concluded.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear whether the OSI inquiry prompted the Air Force to deny a recent Freedom of Information Act request from Valerie Schmitz\u2019s legal team. Information they sought on the suspected fake ejection seat parts was \u201cexpected to interfere with enforcement proceedings,\u201d the Air Force said in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny responsive documents to your request are not releasable to you at this time. \u2026 Your request has been closed,\u201d wrote Roxanne Jensen, head of OSI\u2019s FOIA branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense contracting fraud comes in many forms, from overbilling the Pentagon to providing counterfeit components to falsifying military housing paperwork. The Justice Department was publicly handling nearly 80 major defense fraud and bribery cases as of April, five of which involve the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon and Justice Department can collaborate on crackdowns of counterfeit aircraft parts. Defense contracting officers can address the issue by telling a company to provide legitimate products and then ending the contract, while DOJ can pursue fines and possible imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/05\/30\/dod-bought-phony-military-gear-made-in-china-including-counter-night-vision-clothing-that-didnt-actually-work\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/NODS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD bought phony military gear made in China, including counter-night vision clothing that didn\u2019t actually work<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The counterfeits included clothing that used a near-infrared fabric to make the wearer more difficult for enemy forces to detect with night-vision goggles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 2013 to 2017, the federal government recovered more than $6.6 billion from defense contracting fraud cases, according to the Government Accountability Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, a GAO report on shortcomings in the Pentagon\u2019s efforts to combat fraud noted that the Air Force did not adequately track procurement fraud as required in periodic risk assessments.
