{"id":39251,"date":"2020-10-20T21:20:07","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T21:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/20\/space-force-gets-its-first-recruits\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:07:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:07:20","slug":"space-force-gets-its-first-recruits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/10\/20\/space-force-gets-its-first-recruits\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force gets its first recruits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/03\/27\/amid-a-global-pandemic-the-space-force-is-still-working-to-get-off-the-ground\/\" target=_blank>Space Force<\/a> on Tuesday inducted the first seven recruits to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2020\/08\/27\/in-new-uniform-guidance-space-force-is-down-with-ocp\/\" target=_blank>fledgling service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a ceremony at Military Entrance Processing Station-Baltimore in Maryland, which was broadcast online, Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. David Thompson swore in the first four enlisted recruits. Chief Master Sgt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/14\/this-familiar-face-is-the-space-forces-first-top-noncommissioned-officer\/\" target=_blank>Roger Towberman<\/a>, the service\u2019s top enlisted adviser, also attended the Baltimore ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you\u2019re wondering, all on camera wore masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second ceremony, for another three recruits, was scheduled to be held later Tuesday at MEPS-Denver in Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecruits, first of all thanks for volunteering to defend our nation, and congratulations on being the first Americans to enlist directly into the United States Space Force,\u201d Thompson said. He then administered their oath of enlistment and congratulated them with elbow bumps instead of the traditional handshake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recruits will now head to the Air Force\u2019s seven-and-a-half-week basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Monday release previewing the ceremony, Thompson said it marked \u201can important milestone\u201d in the process of standing up the Space Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUntil now, we\u2019ve been focused on building our initial ranks with transfers from the Air Force,&#8221; Thompson said in the release. &#8220;With these new recruits, we begin to look to the future of our force by bringing in the right people directly to realize our aspirations of building a tech-savvy service that\u2019s reflective of the nation we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/09\/15\/from-uniforms-to-first-sergeants-space-force-gets-down-to-basics\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spaceforceflag.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">From uniforms to first sergeants, Space Force gets down to basics<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Space Force will use Air Force-like first sergeants for now, but has not ruled out moving to the Navy type of system where multiple SNCOs hold those responsibilities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force boot camp will use Air Force BMT as its foundation, Monday\u2019s release said, but will add a space-specific curriculum to tailor it to the new service\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recruits are from Colorado, Maryland and Virginia, and their ages range from 18 to 31. The Space Force said it wants diversity to be one of its top priorities. Of the seven recruits, there are two women, and two Black recruits, including one Black woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force hopes to have 2,500 members by the end of December, and grow steadily until it reaches 6,500 active-duty members by the end of fiscal 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active-duty senior enlisted airmen in cyber, intelligence, acquisitions and engineering career fields will start transferring to the Space Force Dec. 1. Officer and other enlisted service members in those career fields will then begin transferring themselves on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a recruit asked Thompson how things have differed from the Air Force so far, he said the Space Force is trying to establish its own, unique culture. But he noted that many of the missions the Space Force now does had been going on in the Air Force for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe things that we\u2019re doing every day, so far, we\u2019ve been doing for a long time,\u201d Thompson told the recruits. \u201cSo, we know how to do this. It\u2019s establishing that vision for the future and pursuing that, that we\u2019re working on. And that\u2019s where you all are going to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPretty much the same, but cooler,\u201d Towberman added to laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
