Senior master sergeants are experienced operational leaders who hold supervisory jobs like serving as the top enlisted airmen at the squadron and group levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The senior master sergeant selection rate continues to grow as the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/10\/16\/the-air-force-is-launching-an-era-of-transformation-can-it-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">rebalances its enlisted force<\/a>, one piece of which is expanding the E-8 corps from 1.8% to 2% of enlisted airmen, according to Air Force data. The service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2024\/03\/11\/air-force-plans-for-more-flying-flat-workforce-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\">expects its workforce to remain essentially flat<\/a> through the end of fiscal year 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the restructuring succeeds, the Air Force will grow its pool of junior enlisted airmen and build experience among fewer midlevel noncommissioned officers before they reach a slightly larger senior enlisted corps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, that means it will take slightly longer to climb the career ladder. The Air Force had <a href=\"https:\/\/dwp.dmdc.osd.mil\/dwp\/api\/downloadZ?fileId=127687&#038;groupName=milRankGrade\" target=\"_blank\">more than 4,800 senior master sergeants<\/a> as of the end of
