Thomas Bussiere, the head of Air Force Global Strike Command, approved the nuclear-capable fleet\u2019s return to normal operations on May 18, command spokesperson Brus Vidal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe successfully accomplished all necessary actions to safely return to full flight operations,\u201d Vidal said. \u201cOur ability to deliver nuclear deterrence and provide long-range strike was never in doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/12\/22\/whiteman-afbs-only-runway-reopens-after-b-2-bomber-accident\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1000w_q75-1-7.jpg-7.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Whiteman AFB\u2019s only runway reopens after B-2 bomber accident<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Having a functioning runway again means the base can resume flying its A-10C attack planes and T-38 training jets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not answer whether the Air Force found issues with the fleet that required fixing before the jets could fly again, or whether any bombers are still out of commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear what the Air Force was looking for as it surveyed the Spirit fleet in the aftermath of its second mishap in two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Dec. 10, 2022, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/12\/12\/b-2-stealth-bomber-damaged-in-emergency-landing-at-whiteman\/\">undisclosed in-flight malfunction<\/a> forced a B-2 crew to make an emergency landing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, where firefighters extinguished flames at the scene. No one was injured, Whiteman\u2019s 509th Bomb Wing said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has not yet released a public version of its investigation into that accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident came about a year after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/09\/17\/b-2-bomber-crashes-in-missouri-after-in-flight-malfunction-none-injured\/\">another Spirit bomber\u2019s landing gear failed<\/a>, causing it to skid off of Whiteman\u2019s runway and into the grass with one wing on the ground. The mishap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/03\/17\/old-weak-landing-gear-springs-led-to-a-b-2s-10m-skid-off-the-runway\/\">cost the Air Force nearly $10 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service hasn\u2019t said whether that B-2, or the one that caught fire in December, have returned to regular operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global Strike stressed during the pause that the B-2s could still be dispatched on the president\u2019s orders or in support of homeland security in an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B-2 accidents are rare: Before 2021, the most recent recorded incident was in fiscal 2015, according to the Air Force Safety Center. That was preceded by a fire that heavily damaged one bomber in 2010. Another B-2 was destroyed in a crash upon takeoff in Guam in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force\u2019s fleet of 19 operational B-2s at Whiteman have flown long-range strike and surveillance missions since the 1990s, from NATO\u2019s Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia to campaigns against the Islamic State group in the wider Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2021\/12\/22\/not-so-stealthy-b-2-bomber-caught-on-google-earth\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-12-22-at-12.19.19-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Not-so-stealthy B-2 bomber caught on Google Earth<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The B-2 is known for being virtually undetectable.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-pilot aircraft can tote up to 40,000 pounds of nuclear and conventional munitions and have participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/07\/14\/b-2-spirits-arrive-in-australia-for-bomber-task-force-rotation\/\">rotational deployments around the world<\/a> aimed at preventing Russian and Chinese aggression toward the U.S. and its allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the fleet is expensive to fly and has struggled to stay in top shape. The B-2s logged a 52.8% mission-capable rate in fiscal 2022, meaning just half of the jets were able to perform at least one key mission in flight, the Air Force said May 15.
