Charles \u201cCQ\u201d Brown Jr. and Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Tanya Downsworth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApplicant pool goals will not necessarily directly result in increasing diversity in our active duty officer corps, though it does represent one small part of how the [Department of the Air Force] is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/12\/21\/consistent-widespread-racial-disparities-hurt-black-airmen-ig-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">addressing diversity issues<\/a> across the force,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching the new targets can gradually contribute to a steep uptick in representation among nonwhite troops, compared to the current composition of Department of the Air Force officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/07\/09\/air-force-announces-first-changes-from-diversity-task-force\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/af-diversity-1.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force announces first changes from diversity task force<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The diversity task force has already put in place more ROTC scholarships for minorities, changes to dress and appearance regulations and shaving waivers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Tuesday, the Air Force and Space Force\u2019s 65,090-member officer corps was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>76.8% white<\/li><li>6.4% Black\/African American<\/li><li>5.8% Asian<\/li><li>3.6% multiracial<\/li><li>0.6% Native Hawaiian\/Pacific Islander<\/li><li>0.5% American Indian\/Native Alaskan<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 8% of officers were of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, the Air Force Personnel Center said Wednesday. Others chose not to report their race or ethnicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further diversifying the officer corps could have ripple effects up the chain of command, particularly among pilots and other rated officers, who are most often promoted to leadership positions and are overwhelmingly white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could also start to balance out demographic differences between officers and the enlisted force, which accounts for every eight in 10 airmen and is more diverse than the officer corps. All too often, the message he received was unsettling.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years ago, Air Force Recruiting Service boss Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas told reporters the service planned to bring in a more diverse set of applicants, particularly among rated officers. The Air Force did not disclose the figures it wanted to hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the Air Force is for the first time setting separate targets for male and female applicants within each racial and ethnic group; for example, aiming for 8.5% Black men and 4.5% Black women. All recruits, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity, have to meet the same standards for entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese goals are aspirational \u2026 and will not be used in any manner that undermines our merit-based processes,\u201d the memo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROTC is the largest commissioning source, providing over 40% of new air and space officers. About 23% come from the Air Force Academy, and 20% arrive through Officer Training School. Though enrollees and graduates end up slightly less diverse, USAFA and ROTC typically remain within 1 percentage point of their goals each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, of the 973 cadets who graduated from USAFA in May, nearly three-quarters were men. About 70% were white, followed by 11% Asian, 9% Black or African American, 2% Pacific Islander and 1% American Indian or Native Alaskan cadets.
