Similarly, industries around the globe today are stepping up to supplement a dwindling supply of medical equipment as the nation fights to stifle the spread of the novel coronavirus, or Covid-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/money\/\">General Motors and Tesla<\/a> have promised to divert company resources toward remedying the nation\u2019s ventilator shortage, with designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/21\/style\/coronavirus-masks-dov-charney-christian-siriano.html\">Christian Siriano<\/a> \u2014 among others in the fashion industry \u2014 going so far as to reassign his team of seamstresses to produce CDC-approved face masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industrial similarities that span the two eras are evident, but how, exactly, does today\u2019s public stack up to the WWII American citizenry from a standpoint of hoarding, rationing, or even bootlegging?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Hoarding<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoarding became a mainstay throughout the war years, with many citizens endeavoring to stock up on items the public anticipated would soon be rationed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mad scramble in 1943 prompted one official at the Portland Office of Price Administration (OPA) to try \u2014 in vain \u2014 to dissuade consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst, it\u2019s unpatriotic, and public opinion would make the would-be hoarders very unhappy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.oregon.gov\/archives\/exhibits\/ww2\/Pages\/services-rationing.aspx\" target=_blank>the flummoxed official wrote<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecond, you will have to report your present goods on hand when you get your ration cards. Third, you can\u2019t possibly anticipate in advance exactly where shortages will develop. Just as a case in point, the greatest single run on a single item handled by department stores was the rush for all-wool men\u2019s clothing last spring. (Photo courtesy of the University of Northwestern Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like the poor OPA official today\u2019s government pleas for citizens to restrict their shopping cart supply to only what they <i>need<\/i> have gone wildly unheeded, as Americans everywhere insist on stashing toilet paper at a rate that would satisfy a household of 86. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To counterbalance this shortage, some restaurants have humorously taken up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfweekly.com\/dining\/this-michelin-starred-restaurant-is-giving-away-toilet-paper\/\">giving out toilet paper rolls<\/a> for pick-up food orders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurantbusinessonline.com\/marketing\/restaurants-offering-side-toilet-paper-delivery-pickup-orders\">Trending phrases<\/a> like \u201cWe\u2019ve got your back(side)\u201d and \u201cPanic at the Costco\u201d have managed to bring humor to an otherwise grim scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Alcohol<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During World War II whiskey and cigarettes mysteriously escaped the government\u2019s list of rationed items \u2013\u2013 because, priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently deemed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-usa-liquor\/new-york-hair-and-nail-salons-to-shut-but-booze-deemed-essential-idUSKBN2173MV\">liquor stores as \u201cessential businesses<\/a>\u201d to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other essential businesses that will stay operational include hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, and news media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grazie mille, Cuomo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Price Gouging and the Black Market<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sugar, coffee, meat, canned fish, cheese, and canned milk were rationed from May 1942 into March 1943. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like the Prohibition era, this led to black market operations cropping up all over CONUS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/tellingallamericansstories\/upload\/WWIIHomeFront-508-Compliant.pdf\">World War II and the American Home Front<\/a>, author John W. Jeffries estimates that at least 20 percent of all American businesses were given warnings about black market activities. Of those, seven percent wound up being charged for the illegal activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owners, however, were rarely convicted. At most, they were hit with a small fine that seldom elicited persuasion strong enough to call a halt to slinging illegal or marked-up goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to 2020 and the story of Air Force veteran Matt Colvin, who, alongside his brother, Noah, admitted to buying approximately 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer with the intent of reselling them for prices that ran as high as $70 a pop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the \u201centrepreneurs\u201d were quickly shut down, to quote<a
