Department officials said that in the Veterans Health Administration alone, leaders need to hire about 50,000 new recruits in coming years to keep up with the demand for veterans services and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help with that demand, Congress last spring passed the Retention and Income Security Enhancement (RAISE) Act, which provided new pay and bonus regulations for certain department employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jessica Bonjorni, Chief Human Capital Management at the Veterans Health Administration, said through that legislation, department officials have already boosted pay for about 10,000 nurses and physician assistants through the new authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law also boosts additional recruiting and retention incentives, including increased student loan repayment offerings up to $100,000. The department is also implementing new child care and vacation incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/10\/21\/va-plans-onboarding-surge-in-november-to-clear-backlog-of-new-hires\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/va-medical-center.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA plans \u2018onboarding surge\u2019 in November to clear backlog of new hires<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The event will bring together hiring managers and senior medical center staff to find ways to improve the process.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s never been a better time to work for the VA,\u201d Bonjorni said. \u201cWe hired over 47,000 new staff into VHA last year, which set a new record for us, despite the incredibly tight labor market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough has emphasized in recent months the need to improve hiring practices and department recruiting, especially given the workload ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, President Joe Biden signed into law the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (better known as the PACT Act), sweeping new military toxic exposure legislation which will offer new benefits or medical care to as many as one in five veterans nationwide in coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department is also still working to recover from a host of postponed appointments and partially shuttered from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re about halfway through implementing these new policies,\u201d McDonough said on Tuesday. \u201cAnd God willing, we\u2019re gonna see outcomes that relate to retaining professionals, recruiting new ones, and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 increased access and improved health outcomes for our events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lee said in response to the increased surge of job applications, officials are working with the Office of Personnel Management on ways to better automate how those resumes can be sorted and reviewed.
