Matt Rosendale, R-Mont.<\/a>, who chairs the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs subcommittee on technology, during a hearing Tuesday. \u201cThis is a situation where the VA is badly in need of independent oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, VA leaders announced they had found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/08\/24\/thousands-of-vets-disability-claims-delayed-years-because-of-glitch\/\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 32,000 veterans\u2019 disability claims delayed<\/a> \u2014 some dating back years \u2014 due to technical flaws in the department\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/va.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA.gov<\/a> filing systems. Two weeks later, officials acknowledged<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/09\/06\/more-technical-problems-found-with-vas-disability-claims-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 57,000 more similarly delayed cases<\/a> involving veterans trying to add dependents to their accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/09\/06\/more-technical-problems-found-with-vas-disability-claims-system\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4263677.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More technical problems found with VA\u2019s disability claims system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Nearly 90,000 cases filed through VA.gov have been delayed because of glitches in the department&#039;s system.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all of the cases, VA officials pledged to backdate veterans\u2019 pay as soon as possible. But the mistakes may have delayed potentially thousands of dollars in monthly payouts to individuals suffering from military-related illnesses or injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs Chief Information Officer Kurt DelBene noted that the errors represent a small fraction of the more than seven million cases filed since early 2018, but he also acknowledged that any mistake that causes financial harm to veterans is unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA will resolve these issues, prevent them from happening again, and address them more quickly when needed,\u201d he told lawmakers. \u201cAnd most importantly, we\u2019ll make sure that all impacted veterans get the benefits and services that they deserve as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But several lawmakers said those promises aren\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we have a problem with addressing the major issues in leadership and officials not being held accountable for things that they do or do not do in upholding their responsibilities to veterans,\u201d said Rep. Morgan Luttrell, R-Texas. \u201cMy concern is that no one is holding [anyone] responsible for this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DelBene said leadership is pressing for fixes and improvements to the system, but not with the threat of mass firings. Officials from the department said that work will include better oversight systems to ensure that similar problems in the future are quickly caught, preventing problems from compounding over months or years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, in a letter to VA leadership, committee Chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., lamented the problems as \u201cjust the latest in a string of electronic filing issues that continue to plague the department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such problems include ongoing issues with the department\u2019s 10-year, $16-billion effort to overhaul its electronic health records system, which has been delayed by technical issues for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials at Tuesday\u2019s hearings promised regular updates to the committee on their proposed fixes in the coming weeks.
