{"id":42348,"date":"2025-08-12T20:36:47","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/08\/12\/air-force-investigating-airmans-death-during-pt-test\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:22:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:22:05","slug":"air-force-investigating-airmans-death-during-pt-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2025\/08\/12\/air-force-investigating-airmans-death-during-pt-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force investigating airman\u2019s death during PT test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has launched an investigation into the Aug. 4 death of an airman in California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2025\/08\/01\/marine-corps-reserve-sergeant-dies-after-collapsing-during-pft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2025\/08\/01\/marine-corps-reserve-sergeant-dies-after-collapsing-during-pft\/\">during a physical training assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airman 1st Class Syamukonka Moonga was conducting a PT test, which the service called \u201croutine,\u201d when he collapsed, the Air Force said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military training leaders and other airmen who were already at the scene \u2014 and then arriving medical personnel \u2014 began life-saving measures to try to revive Moonga, but were unable to save him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force said it is now conducting a standard investigation into Moonga\u2019s death to find out what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moonga was assigned to the 346th Training Squadron at Port Hueneme in California, where Naval Base Ventura County is located. The 346th provides training for vehicle maintenance and management airmen at Port Huaneme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe mourn the loss of Airman 1st Class Moonga, a young airman with a bright future,\u201d squadron commander Lt. Col. Jonathan Ely said in the statement. \u201cHis joy, kindness and enthusiasm will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with Syamukonka\u2019s family, friends and fellow service members during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Facebook page under Moonga\u2019s name said he was originally from Zambia. The page has photos posted July 12 of him in uniform, including his official military portrait and a photograph of him walking through downtown San Antonio, Texas, and a caption reading \u201cAim High Airman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve also died in June after collapsing during a physical fitness test.
