When asked what caused the spike in promotions, an Air Force spokesperson called the increase a \u201cdeliberate\u201d decision that aligns with the service\u2019s force management strategy and budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese changes demonstrate our commitment to recognizing excellence and ensuring our force remains agile and responsive to emerging challenges,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As noncommissioned officers, technical sergeants are expected to be experts in their fields and midlevel leaders within their units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those tapped to move up the ladder in the most recent cycle have spent nearly five years, on average, at their current grade, and around nine years and nine months in the Air Force. That\u2019s slightly longer than the time in grade and service amassed by last year\u2019s selectees, as the service has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/19\/air-force-enlisted-promotions-outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\">shrunk the number of available midlevel promotion slots<\/a> in a bid to build more experience at each rank and grow the early-career enlisted corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort to reshape the Air Force\u2019s top-heavy enlisted corps includes a plan to cut the cadre of technical sergeants to 15% of the enlisted force by fiscal year 2025, then move those billets to lower ranks. As of June 10, the Air Force had 39,981 active duty technical sergeants, the service said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2024\/03\/11\/air-force-plans-for-more-flying-flat-workforce-in-2025\/\">expects its workforce to remain flat<\/a> in fiscal
