Richard Wholey, said the deployment marked the first time an American air defense artillery brigade had deployed to Europe since the end of the Cold War.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/road-to-warsaw\/2016\/06\/14\/us-army-grapples-with-short-range-air-defense-gap-in-europe\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636014950012421156-shoradgapjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army Grapples With Short-Range Air Defense Gap in Europe<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The US Army has wrapped up a review of possible short-range air defense weapons from around the world and is working to fill a critical gap in Europe.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Today is a historic day for U.S. Army Europe, the [10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command], [U.S. Army Garrison] Ansbach and the local Ansbach community,&#8221; Wholey said during the ceremony. &#8220;Here we are in Ansbach uncasing the 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade colors \u2014 the first uncased since the Cold War drawdown in Europe.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 678th ADA works to command and coordinate the operations of subordinate air defense artillery battalions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the unit being the first ADA to return to the European theater since the end of the Cold War, it is the only integrated fires brigade in the Army\u2019s inventory, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/202841\/678th_air_defense_artillery_brigade_uncases_colors_in_ansbach_germany\">Army press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit will provide pivotal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2018\/01\/16\/army-brings-back-the-stinger-missile-in-the-face-of-russian-aggression\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">short-range air defense<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2018\/01\/16\/army-brings-back-the-stinger-missile-in-the-face-of-russian-aggression\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">SHORAD<\/a>) coordination for U.S. forces in Europe, a capability found lacking when compared to the Russian military\u2019s assets on display in the Ukraine conflict.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBack in the 1990s, decisions were made to downsize and there was not much of a need for SHORAD,\u201d said Col.
