{"id":43303,"date":"2021-04-06T18:22:15","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T18:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/06\/quantum-breakthroughs-help-army-air-force-advance-supercomputing\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:10:16","slug":"quantum-breakthroughs-help-army-air-force-advance-supercomputing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/04\/06\/quantum-breakthroughs-help-army-air-force-advance-supercomputing\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantum breakthroughs help Army, Air Force advance supercomputing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Army builds its forces on the multi-domain operations concept for future warfighting, a core problem for today\u2019s technologists is figuring out how to have a constant view of the battlefield and share that information across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s computers simply can\u2019t handle the immense amount of data and speed necessary for commanders and soldiers to gain a clear picture of their surroundings and the ability to use that information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter quantum computing \u2014 a long sought-after solution for advancing computing processing and capabilities, which while promising is still a delicate and resource-intensive way of crunching numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/30\/sticky-tape-graphite-and-army-research-into-cutting-edge-sensors-that-may-transform-everything\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/graphene2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Sticky tape, graphite and Army research into cutting edge sensors that may transform everything<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The researchers have found promising new ways to Improve sensors, which play a role in thermal imaging, electronic warfare equipment, radio communications, radar and anything that detects or transmits a signal.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three recent Army science-funded breakthroughs are solving decades-old problems that could put quantum supercomputers in the hands of Army decision makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent weeks, papers published through Army and Air Force-led efforts have found new ways to correct longstanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/244262\" target=_blank>errors in quantum methods<\/a>, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/244508\" target=_blank>machine learning techniques <\/a>to improve sensing and methods to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/244139\" target=_blank>build quantum communication networks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional computers are built using transistors that turn on or off a signal, signifying a 1 or a 0, which becomes the code that the computer reads to perform tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But quantum computing uses units called qubits, offering a plethora of other ways to represent data. That option then provides exponential gains in processing power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More processing power means more data, which leads to a wider- and higher-resolution view of what\u2019s going on in the real world for military commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those qubits, however, are more sensitive to errors, which mean more resources in the hardware devoted to checking and correcting those errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, under funding from the Army Research Office and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, found ways in recent experiments to protect quantum information from errors caused in superconducting systems. These are the main platforms on which scientists anticipate building large-scale quantum computers, according to research published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03257-0?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nature%2Frss%2Fcurrent+%28Nature+-+Issue%29&#038;utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher\" target=_blank>Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This method allows for the errors to be spontaneously corrected, vastly improving efficiency, which would help reduce the burden on future computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEfficiency is increasingly important as quantum computation systems grow in size to the scales we\u2019ll need for Army relevant applications,\u201d said Dr. Sara Gamble, ARO quantum information science program manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate team, at Louisiana State University, has found a way to use machine learning to correct information distortion in quantum systems that are made of photons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/qute.202170031\" target=_blank>Advanced Quantum Technologies<\/a>, showed \u201cmachine learning techniques using the self-learning and self-evolving features of artificial neural networks can help correct distorted information,\u201d according to an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/244508\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photons essentially serve as carriers of quantum data, moving them across the network. But the information can be distorted by environmental fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of sending a letter in the mail but the letter gets soaking wet, bleeding out all of the ink on the paper, making it unreadable. The letter still arrived but it\u2019s useless and unable to be reconstructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This machine learning method could hold multiple applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using light modes to transmit quantum information is used in quantum communication, cryptography and sensing, said Narayan Bhusal, an LSU doctoral candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur method is remarkably effective and time-efficient compared to conventional techniques,\u201d Bhusal noted. \u201cThis is an exciting development for the future of free-space quantum technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, scientists at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, through funding and management by the U.S. Army Combat Capability Development Command, were able to send entangled qubits through a communication cable, linking two network nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their work was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03288-7\" target=_blank>Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an exciting achievement and one that paves the way for increasingly complex experiments with additional quantum nodes that we\u2019ll need for the large-scale quantum networks and computers of ultimate interest to the Army,\u201d Gamble said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists must be able to transfer entangled qubits in order to scale up quantum computing, said John A. MacLean, senior professor at the University of Chicago and lead researcher for the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo send the entangled states through the communication cable\u2014a one-meter-long superconducting cable\u2014the researchers created an experimental set-up with three superconducting qubits in each of two nodes,\u201d according to an Army statement. \u201cThey connected one qubit in each node to the cable and then sent quantum states, in the form of microwave photons, through the cable with minimal loss of information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe
