Morris got 10 years in prison for violating the terms of his probation for felony burglary, while Nelson got five years on a drug possession conviction. Pinski suspended three years of each defendant\u2019s sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/02\/14\/lead-investigator-in-green-beret-murder-case-faces-charges-of-stolen-valor\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635711926425874713-arm-mathew-l-golsteyn-1jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lead investigator in Green Beret murder case faces charges of stolen valor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The revelation could have major impact on the Army&#039;s case against the major facing a murder charge.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before they can be eligible for parole, Pinski ordered both men to hand write the names of all 6,756 Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan; write out the obituaries of the 40 Montanans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and send hand-written letters of apology to several veterans groups identifying themselves as having lied about military service to receive help and possibly a lesser sentence through a veterans court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2019\/06\/12\/veterans-courts-could-get-big-boost-if-congress-passes-this-law\/\" target=_blank>Veterans court programs<\/a> create and supervise treatment plans to address crimes that may be due to service-related post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, anger issues or substance abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to make sure that my message is received loud and clear by these two defendants,\u201d Pinski said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morris claimed in 2016 he did seven combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, had PTSD and had his hip replaced after being injured by an improvised explosive device. He was sentenced to perform 441 hours of community service with a veteran\u2019s organization \u2014 one for each Montanan killed in combat since the Korean War. I am not a veteran. I stole valor. I have dishonored all veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorneys for both men objected to the placard condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorney Mark Frisbie said his client has not been charged with stolen valor, which is a federal crime, but was being punished for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pinski said he was punishing the men for lying to the court. He also cited Montana Supreme Court rulings that give him discretion to take the stolen valor into account and others that upheld the placard
