Eight of them \u2014 including former Pennsylvania Rep. Patrick Murphy, who will serve as chairman \u2014 were announced by the White House in early March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ninth has yet to be selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/14\/dozens-of-va-medical-centers-slated-for-closure-total-rebuilds-under-new-infrastructure-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6310214164_210cffd497_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dozens of VA medical centers slated for closure, total rebuilds under new infrastructure plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The plan still must be reviewed by an independent commission and approved by Congress before changes start to go into effect.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delay has caused angst among lawmakers and veterans groups who fear the commission may not have enough time to go through the massive volume of market data, department operational files and site interviews needed to determine how best to deploy VA health care assets for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hanging in the balance is the potential closing of dozens of VA medical centers, the construction of dozens more, or absolutely nothing if the commission\u2019s work isn\u2019t completed in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, VA Secretary Denis McDonough acknowledged the frustration around the panel delays, saying his department is doing what it can to prepare information for the panel once it is established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf there\u2019s no commissioner, there\u2019s still a statute,\u201d he said. \u201cWe still have these needs, and so we\u2019ll be looking at what our options are there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, McDonough unveiled VA\u2019s formal recommendations to the commission, which included closing or completely reconstructing 35 major VA medical centers in 21 states and nearly $2 trillion in infrastructure spending.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/17\/va-works-to-ease-staff-concerns-about-facility-closure-recommendations\/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fveterans%22%2C%22from%22%3A5%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">VA works to ease staff concerns about facility closure recommendations<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recommendations drew immediate condemnation from union officials, who voiced concerns about disruptions to patient care and staffing levels. Also unhappy were conservative advocates, who noted the review was originally conceived with the idea of closing down more sites and allowing veterans to seek more private-sector care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission is expected to heavily revise McDonough\u2019s list, something the secretary said he would welcome. VA senior staff have expressed concerns that the review \u2014 mandated by Congress \u2014 was too reliant on outdated information about health care options in communities across the country, which changed dramatically due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that commission work won\u2019t start until the ninth panel member is named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eight nominees already announced include veterans group representatives and health care experts, as well as selections from the White House, House Republican leadership, and House and Senate Democratic leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congressional officials confirmed that the missing nomination is one set aside for senior Senate Republican leaders. A source close to the process said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., sent his pick to the White House in March, but no public announcement has been made yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials did not respond to requests for comment on the commission. VA officials deferred questions about the nominations to the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/09\/white-house-names-picks-to-lead-va-health-and-benefits-efforts\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fveterans%22%2C%22from%22%3A15%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">White House names picks to lead VA health and benefits efforts<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pandemic complications delayed the mandated release of McDonough\u2019s recommendations by almost two months. But the legislation that established the AIR Commission still calls for the panel\u2019s final report to be done by Jan. 31, 2023, and for the White House to approve or reject the recommendations by Feb. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough has repeatedly cautioned that any infrastructure decisions made by senior leaders or the commission will likely take years to implement, and that patients and staff should not worry about any short-term changes to their facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue to communicate with the workforce and with our veterans to make sure that everybody understands precisely the decisions we\u2019re going to make,\u201d he said. \u201cNone of these decisions will be made behind closed doors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the commission\u2019s review work isn\u2019t happening behind closed doors either.
