{"id":45797,"date":"2018-10-26T21:28:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T21:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/26\/could-the-air-force-restart-the-c-17-production-line\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:35:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:35:51","slug":"could-the-air-force-restart-the-c-17-production-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/10\/26\/could-the-air-force-restart-the-c-17-production-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Could the Air Force restart the C-17 production line?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 As part of the Air Force\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-force-association\/2018\/09\/17\/air-force-secretary-plans-to-grow-its-squadron-count-but-will-the-budget-follow\/\" target=_blank>push to boost its number of operational squadrons<\/a> to 386 total, and the service may need additional C-17s, the head of Air Mobility Command said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/09\/17\/air-force-calls-for-74-more-squadrons-to-prepare-for-possibility-of-war-against-major-power\/\" target=_blank>service\u2019s expansion plan<\/a>, which was named \u201cThe Air Force We Need\u201d and unveiled this September, called for one airlift squadron and 14 tanker squadrons to be added by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, service leaders from Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson to AMC Commander Gen. Maryanne Miller, said more work would need to be done in order to determine the mix of aircraft needed to get to the 386 squadron goal, which is 74 more than the service has now.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/air-force-association\/2018\/09\/18\/air-force-plan-to-get-to-386-squadrons-still-a-fuzzy-proposition\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/34018882432_e9b3e47e5b_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force plan to get to 386 squadrons still a fuzzy proposition<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Is the Air Force&#039;s 386-squadron goal just another pipe dream?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now, AMC has a better idea of what it could require, Miller told reporters during an Oct. 26 roundtable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis from \u201cThe Air Force We Need\u201d supports adding three new C-17 Globemaster III squadrons and cutting two C-130 Hercules squadrons from the airlift inventory, she said. That would bring the total number of airlift squadrons up to 54, an increase of one squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/airlift-tanker-annual\/\" target=_blank><b>Read more from the Airlift\/Tanker Association conference! <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Boeing\u2019s C-17 production line in Long Beach, California is dead, with the company having manufactured the final Globemaster in 2015. Increasing the number of C-17s could entail restarting the production line \u2014 an expensive proposition for any aircraft \u2014 but Miller said the Air Force had not yet begun discussing the possibility with Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Those are the details that we have not looked at,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat will be the next discussion as we proceed, talking with Congress and working with Congress, because the same would apply for the tanker fleet,\u201d she said. \u201cAn additional 14 squadrons by 2030 \u2014 what would be the path to get there? Something we\u2019re looking at, but again, this is just the initial stages of talking with Congress and getting this concept out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear what other options would exist to increase the number of C-17 squadrons aside from restarting the production line. The U.S. Air Force currently operates 222 C-17s, but began retiring some of the oldest Globemaster IIIs in 2012. It may be possible that those C-17s could be taken out of storage and revitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/airlift-tanker-annual\/2018\/10\/26\/what-happens-once-the-kc-46-is-delivered\/\" target=_blank>Boeing <\/a>had no comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller stressed that discussions about the makeup of the future airlift fleet are still in the beginning stages, and will be informed not only by Congress but also by an ongoing AMC study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That Mobility Capabilities Requirements Study is slated to be delivered to Capitol Hill in a couple of months, and may have different recommendations than the \u201cAir Force We Need\u201d analysis on how many airlift squadrons are needed, and of what aircraft models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe two studies took slightly different approaches to that,\u201d she said. \u201cThe results of each of those studies will be reviewed and I think there will be a combination somewhere in there to try to validate
