The notion that VA loans take longer to close than other mortgage products has become a popular one: Asked about what myths needed busting in the VA loan process, a top official counted the supposed closing delay as tops on his list<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s not alone. Real-estate agent and Army veteran Juanita Charles<\/a>, who serves an area near Kentucky\u2019s Fort Campbell, said she\u2019s often told that \u201ca buyer using a VA loan will be harder to get closed, and takes longer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe truth is,\u201d Charles said, \u201cyou can close a VA loan in 30 days or less, just like any other loan type. While the VA appraiser does check the house to make sure it meets VA standards, they are usually looking for safety hazards and things of that nature. The appraiser is not doing another home inspection to find new issues\/repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing in a month may not be possible for all home sales, but new statistics from mortgage-processing and data firm Ellie Mae<\/a> show the difference in closing times between loan types is nearly nonexistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, the average VA home-purchasing loan took 49 days to close. That\u2019s three days longer than the overall average and two days longer than home-buying loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration, per Ellie Mae\u2019s December 2017 Insight Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refinances showed a bit more of a lag, with VA-backed loans taking 48 days, a week longer than the average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of the figures are down from the previous December, when VA purchasing loans took 50 days to close, two days longer than the overall average and a day longer than FHA loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
