It mirrors legislation advanced by the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee this week and is expected to easily pass on the House floor next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have worked closely with our partners in the veterans community and with our colleagues in the House to ensure this legislation makes the necessary changes to improve the G.I. Bill and helps veterans succeed in their desired career field,\u201d Isakson said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, he told Military Times that he expected no significant opposition to the expansion plan in the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill would remove the 15-year time limit for veterans to use their post-9\/11 GI Bill benefits and provide new eligibility rules for a host of groups. Reservists mobilized under selected reserve orders, Reservists undergoing medical care and Purple Heart recipients injured early in their military careers would be able to collect the education payouts for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2017\/07\/14\/no-expiration-date-for-beefed-up-gi-bill-benefits-under-new-proposal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/graduation-stock.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">No expiration date for \u2018beefed up\u2019 GI Bill benefits under new proposal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Future military veterans will no longer have to worry about an expiration date on their education benefits if newly proposed legislation in the House of Representatives makes its way to the president\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To pay for the expansions \u2014 an estimated cost of about $3 billion over the next decade \u2014 lawmakers will reduce housing allowances for new enrollees by one percent over five years. The move is also designed to bring those stipends in line with the military\u2019s basic allowance for housing payouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isakson and his Senate committee colleagues approved similar changes last year as part of a massive veterans omnibus measure. But veterans groups and House lawmakers rejected the package, in large part because of new accountability rules also included in that plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the measure has been embraced by veterans advocates, who have spent recent days canvassing Capitol Hill to build support for the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2017\/07\/18\/va-will-need-major-technology-updates-if-gi-bill-reforms-pass\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635773180433552544-ap-772059955918jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA will need major technology updates if GI Bill reforms pass<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Proposed changes to expand and extend the Post-9\/11 GI Bill would mean a considerable amount of behind-the-scenes work for the agency in charge of administering the updated benefits.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tester hinted that he expects little opposition from Democrats to the plan, even with the other political fights swirling in Congress currently. The Senate measure already has 33 co-sponsors, including 16 Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe G.I. Bill has provided generations of veterans with access to higher education after they have bravely served our country,\u201d Tester said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s been a pleasure working with my colleagues in the House and Senate, as well as veterans and advocates, to craft bipartisan legislation that will break down barriers to and strengthen education benefits for (veterans).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No timetable has been set for when the Senate committee or full chamber may vote on the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
