Gen. Robert Caslen responded to the outrage in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usma.edu\/news\/Shared%20Documents\/Superintendent%27s%20Letter%20to%20Graduates%20Regarding%202nd%20Lt.%20Rapone.pdf\">letter addressed to the men and women of the U.S. Military Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI ask that you help me prevent the negativity associated with the alleged behavior of one graduate from causing us to lose sight of the thousands of graduates who sacrifice and serve honorably every day,\u201d he wrote.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second Lt. Spenser Rapone, who is assigned to 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, is under investigation for his subversive political views by both his unit and West Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USMA\u2019s investigation is focusing on \u201cpolicies and procedures as they pertain to then-Cadet Rapone\u2019s time at USMA, and USMA\u2019s determination of his suitability for graduation and commissioning,\u201d Caslen wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/10\/04\/senator-wants-communist-west-point-grad-booted-from-the-army\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rapone.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Senator wants communist West Point grad booted from the Army<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says a 2nd lieutenant who posed with pro-communist messages at the military academy graduation is unfit to continue serving.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The superintendent\u2019s letter came the same day as another <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@UlisseRJ\/open-letter-to-grads-from-ltc-ret-heffington-659dac71511f\">letter<\/a>, from a retired lieutenant colonel and former West Point professor, made its way onto the Internet.
