{"id":46678,"date":"2021-11-04T23:59:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T23:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/04\/making-a-warrior-call-to-help-overcome-isolation-mitigate-suicide\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:54:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:54:46","slug":"making-a-warrior-call-to-help-overcome-isolation-mitigate-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/opinion\/commentary\/2021\/11\/04\/making-a-warrior-call-to-help-overcome-isolation-mitigate-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Making a \u2018warrior call\u2019 to help overcome isolation, mitigate suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe findings are troubling,\u201d Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/2794601\/following-report-dod-to-redouble-suicide-prevention-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\">said in response to a September report<\/a> on the shocking number of military suicides. \u201cSuicide rates among our service members and military families are still too high, and the trends are not going in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense chief \u2014 and all Americans \u2014 have plenty of reason for concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suicides in the armed forces jumped by 15 percent in 2020 \u2014 from 504 suicides in 2019 to 580 the following year, with USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/11\/01\/military-suicide-worst-camp-lejeune-fort-bragg-fort-carson\/6183053001\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently reporting<\/a> that suicides are particularly pronounced at Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg and Fort Carson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there are the nation\u2019s veterans. More U.S. veterans have died by suicide in the last 10 years than service members who died from combat in Vietnam. The suicide rate for post-9\/11 vets is especially high. And compared with civilians, the rate for veteran suicides is far greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous administrations have tried to arrest the tragic trends through stepped-up programs. Some positive signs are emerging. For example, the suicide rate among veterans fell modestly in 2020, for the first time in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Biden administration is now jumping in with its own priorities. Calling suicide among active-duty forces and vets \u201ca public health and national security crisis,\u201d the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/11\/02\/fact-sheet-new-strategy-outlines-five-priorities-for-reducing-military-and-veteran-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\">released a new plan<\/a> promising \u201ca more coordinated response.\u201d It contains plenty of solid ideas \u2014 about enhancing access to care, improving crisis care, mitigating the factors that lead people to consider suicide, increasing research and better training on the safe storage of firearms and medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/breaking-news\/2021\/11\/02\/embargoed-until-1030am-nov-2-new-white-house-suicide-prevention-plan-for-troops-vets-emphasizes-gun-safety\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6340107.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New White House suicide prevention plan for troops, vets emphasizes gun safety<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The plan comes 16 months after the last White House roadmap to end suicide among veterans and troops.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House provided the caveat that suicide \u201cis a complex problem with no single cause and no single solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is true enough, though one other solution is needed in the approach \u2014 a far greater focus on promoting the one-on-one human connection, on reaching those vets and service members who don\u2019t raise their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many vets who take their lives are terribly isolated, a trend that worsened amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Department of Veterans Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.va.gov\/suicide_prevention\/docs\/Literature-Review-Loneliness-CLEARED-3-5-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">stresses<\/a> that isolation is \u201carguably the strongest and most reliable predictor of suicidal ideation, [suicide] attempts and lethal suicidal behavior.\u201d That helps explain why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klfy.com\/washington-dc\/lawmakers-experts-concerned-about-increase-in-veteran-suicide-rate-according-to-new-va-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">approximately two-thirds<\/a> of those vets who die by suicide have never stepped into a VA center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A growing and important grass roots effort know as <a href=\"https:\/\/warriorcall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Warrior Call<\/a> focuses on overcoming that isolation and reaching people before they slip into an abyss. Think of Warrior Call as a national day of connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warrior Call is asking that \u201call Americans make a call to a warrior, with a vet or active-duty service members, and connect them with support, if necessary,\u201d said Frank Larkin, a former Navy SEAL and Warrior Call co-chair, whose own Navy SEAL son died from suicide. \u201cWe are asking people to connect and have an honest conversation. Check in with that vet or service member, see how they are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort has the backing of all seven living former VA secretaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith its simple mission to implore Americans \u2014 but especially active-duty service members and veterans \u2014 to connect with someone who has worn or is currently wearing the uniform and let them know they care \u2014 Warrior Call can foster greater connectivity, compassion and better outcomes,\u201d they <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/575414-former-va-secretaries-propose-national-warrior-call-day-to-raise-military\" target=\"_blank\">recently wrote<\/a> to U.S. lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/10\/05\/all-7-living-former-sevcvas-seek-national-warrior-call-day-to-raise-military-suicide-awareness\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4018590.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">All 7 living former SECVAs seek \u2018National Warrior Call Day\u2019 to raise military suicide awareness<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If passed as part of the FY2022 NDAA, Sun., Nov. 21 would be the first annual &quot;Warrior Call Day.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan that has sparked anguish and anger among many of the 700,000 veterans who served there, \u201csuch an awareness campaign is especially timely and a valuable non-government tool to put into action,\u201d the former VA chiefs added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first National Warrior Call Day is on Nov. 21. On that day, all Americans should make a call to a warrior \u2014 the first of several such calls throughout the year \u2014 and connect them with resources such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vets4warriors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vets4Warriors<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.va.gov\/suicide_prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serving the nation in uniform is among the most noble of callings.
