{"id":46692,"date":"2018-04-11T13:49:07","date_gmt":"2018-04-11T13:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/11\/former-house-speaker-reverses-course-on-medical-marijuana-citing-positive-benefits-for-vets\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:19:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:19:42","slug":"former-house-speaker-reverses-course-on-medical-marijuana-citing-positive-benefits-for-vets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/11\/former-house-speaker-reverses-course-on-medical-marijuana-citing-positive-benefits-for-vets\/","title":{"rendered":"Former House speaker reverses course on medical marijuana, citing positive benefits for vets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Former House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday said he has shifted his stance on medical marijuana in part because of the potential positive effects it could have for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/10\/25\/in-medical-marijuana-debate-more-veterans-head-to-capitol-hill\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">suffering veterans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehner, who said he was opposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/10\/26\/democrats-push-for-va-to-start-in-depth-medical-marijuana-research\/\">medical marijuana legalization<\/a> during his time in office, this week was appointed to the board of advisers for Acreage Holdings, one of the country\u2019s largest cannabis cultivation and dispensing firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, he called for \u201ca shift in federal marijuana policy\u201d and said his views on the issue have \u201cevolved\u201d in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to look no further than our nation\u2019s 20 million veterans, 20 percent of whom, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/11\/02\/poll-more-than-90-percent-of-vets-support-medical-marijuana-research\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">2017 American Legion survey<\/a>, reportedly use cannabis to self-treat post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and other ailments,\u201d he said in a statement released by Acreage Holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYet the [Department of Veterans Affairs] does not allow its doctors to recommend its usage. There are numerous other patient groups in America whose quality of life has been dramatically improved by the state-sanctioned use of medical cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2017\/08\/31\/research-into-marijuana-benefits-for-vets-with-ptsd-in-danger-of-shutdown\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_17212613743022.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Research into marijuana benefits for vets with PTSD needs more volunteers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An Arizona study hoping to provide definitive answers on the medical benefits of marijuana for wounded veterans is in danger of collapsing because researchers can\u2019t find enough participants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehner said one of the main obstacles to further marijuana research and acceptance is the federal classification of cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, which places strict testing and procurement guidelines on medical testing of the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former speaker\u2019s support now makes him the most prominent Republican in the country to actively advocate for a change in marijuana laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes as veterans groups have made a major push on Capitol Hill for expanded marijuana research, arguing that it has the potential to become a safer alternative to highly addictive opioids for tens of thousands of veterans nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/11\/02\/poll-more-than-90-percent-of-vets-support-medical-marijuana-research\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">The American Legion\u2019s survey<\/a>, released in November, found that more than 90 percent of veterans support expanding research into medical marijuana, and over 80 percent back allowing federal doctors to prescribe it to veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical marijuana is legal in 29 states and the District of Columbia, but is still illegal to use or possess under federal law. That prevents VA doctors from prescribing it to patients even in states where it is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, VA officials updated their guidelines to allow doctors to discuss medical marijuana with patients in an effort to better gauge its usage among veterans. But administration officials still will not let physicians recommend its use or provide assistance in obtaining the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehner said he hopes his work at Acreage will help \u201ctransform the debate, policy and landscape around this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legislative efforts to reschedule cannabis and legalize medical marijuana nationwide have stalled in Congress in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m joining the board of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/AcreageHoldings?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AcreageHoldings<\/a> because my thinking on cannabis has evolved.
