{"id":46901,"date":"2022-04-07T18:13:30","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T18:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/07\/we-fought-for-liberty-michigan-wwii-vets-welcome-memorial\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:56:14","slug":"we-fought-for-liberty-michigan-wwii-vets-welcome-memorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2022\/04\/07\/we-fought-for-liberty-michigan-wwii-vets-welcome-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We fought for liberty:\u2019 Michigan WWII vets welcome memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROYAL OAK, Mich. \u2014 Officials in Michigan are ready to get started on the construction of what they say is one of the few state-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/05\/27\/the-national-world-ii-memorial-needs-millions-of-dollars-of-repair-work-heres-one-plan-to-fix-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">World War II memorials<\/a> in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Art Fishman is excited that the project is taking another step toward reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oak Park resident, who sailed on a Navy destroyer in the Pacific theater as an 18-year-old, was to be among those on hand Thursday afternoon when ground is broken for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/michiganww2memorial.org\/\">The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s more important than people think. Why? Because, if it\u2019s handled right, it will teach the next generation what the war was about, why we were there, what did we fight for. We fought for liberty,\u201d said Fishman, 95, who sailed aboard the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navsource.org\/archives\/05\/562.htm\" target=\"_blank\">USS Robinson<\/a> in 1945 during its stops in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The groundbreaking is for the first phase of the memorial, which includes the laying of more than 1,200 donated Walk of Honor paver bricks and the installation of both a statue called \u201cJoe,\u201d which depicts a soldier in a foxhole reading a letter from home, and flagpoles representing all military branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future phases are to feature a Wall of Stars honoring the 15,000-plus Michigan lives lost during World War II; additional statues, including one dedicated to Rosie the Riveter; an amphitheater and a colonnade of pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memorial, which is recognized by the Legislature as the state\u2019s tribute to the war, is to be built in Memorial Park in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/07\/13\/black-female-wwii-unit-hoping-to-get-congressional-honor\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BlackBattalion.jpg.jpg?w=290\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Black female WWII unit hoping to get congressional honor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 6888th Central Directory Postal Battalion was credited with solving a growing mail crisis during its stint in England and, upon their return, serving as a role model to generations of Black women who joined the military.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the committee that is overseeing the project said the U.S. does not have many state-specific World War II memorials, but some do, including New York and Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan had such a significant impact on the war front, with brave men and women fighting against tyranny, and also at the homefront with the Arsenal of Democracy and other contributions across the state,\u201d said John Maten, president of The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg 6000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22096608514865.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6000px) 100vw, 6000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">World War II veteran Ethel (Cricket) Poland holds a photo of her younger self during an interview, Monday, April 4, 2022, in Oakland Township, Mich. code-breaker with the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland, who has lived in Michigan since the 1960s, served for three years in Washington, D.C., as part of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough my part in the war was very small, I feel that it was worthwhile,\u201d said Poland, who planned to be in Royal Oak for Thursday\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than a dozen veterans organizations are to be present, including members of the American Legion, Tuskegee Airmen, Disabled American Veterans and Michigan Jewish War Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishman was scheduled to speak on behalf of the assembled World War II veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe that was the reason I\u2019ve lived this long is I could see something I felt so sincere about that should happen,\u201d he said.
