It\u2019s been licensed to Defender Pharmaceuticals, a St. Louis-based life sciences company, for further development, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\">Army release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis would be the first non-intravenous cyanide countermeasure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is very exciting,\u201d said Dr. Gary A. Rockwood, a research biologist in the institute\u2019s Medical Toxicology Division who pioneered the development of the antidote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are envisioning the antidote being delivered by autoinjector, similar to an EpiPen, that could quickly and easily be administered into a muscle mass by a medic or even a battle buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyanide is used in a variety of manufacturing processes, but it is highly toxic and a potential chemical warfare agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2025\/01\/10\/soldiers-10-times-more-likely-to-use-nicotine-pouches-study-finds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nicotine-pouch.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Soldiers 10 times more likely to use nicotine pouches, study finds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Nearly one-fourth of Fort Liberty soldiers surveyed in new research study reported using nicotine pouches.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lethal dose can kill within seconds; non-lethal doses can leave survivors with a range of permanent physical and neurological effects,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new countermeasure antidote aims to improve patient survivability, in part by offering longer shelf life and greater portability than intravenous antidotes in current use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new antidote also requires less time to prepare and administer, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/9040508\/new-cyanide-countermeasure-developed-usamricd-reaches-crucial-milestone\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe talked with several companies and venture capitalists, and tried to leave no stone unturned,\u201d said Dr. David Humphrey, a licensing officer at MTT who worked with Rockwood on the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the Army researchers who worked on this project, several other universities and research laboratories contributed to the development of the injectable antidote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere definitely were challenges along the way that we\u2019ve learned a lot from,\u201d Rockwood said. \u201cBut I think that the approach we took provides a potential option for future research. It may take some creativity, may take some patience, but there are alternatives to the typical pathways to getting a product through the regulatory process and into the hands of people who need
