{"id":47999,"date":"2025-03-04T22:07:33","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T22:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/03\/04\/fort-cavazos-soldiers-say-ac-problems-tormented-them-for-over-a-month\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:29:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:29:49","slug":"fort-cavazos-soldiers-say-ac-problems-tormented-them-for-over-a-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2025\/03\/04\/fort-cavazos-soldiers-say-ac-problems-tormented-them-for-over-a-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Cavazos soldiers say AC problems tormented them for over a month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An air conditioning problem that plagued the U.S. Army\u2019s Fort Cavazos barracks in early February continued for several weeks after being identified, according to testimonials from soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers said they experienced five to six weeks of unbearably hot temperatures in their rooms, reporting the problems both on the dorm-reviewing app Hots&amp;Cots and through statements provided to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 7, a Fort Cavazos spokesperson confirmed at least 10 buildings were affected by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2025\/02\/07\/broken-ac-at-fort-cavazos-leaves-soldiers-sweating\/\" target=\"_blank\">mechanical failure with water pumps that controlled the AC units<\/a>. Brian Dosa, director of the Directorate of Public Works, said in an emailed statement that the chillers were fixed and the air conditioning was restored as of Feb. 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe root problem was a manufacturer\u2019s recall on one of our three chillers, which we had to take offline,\u201d Dosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Directorate of Public Works oversees the facility management of Fort Cavazos, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/cavazos\/units-tenants\/Garrison\/DPW\">according<\/a> to the Army website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enduring weeks of heat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fort Cavazos worked to fix the problems in the previous weeks, but the repairs didn\u2019t go as planned, the base previously acknowledged. When Military Times reported on the issue Feb. 7, a spokesperson for the base did not provide a timeline for when the repairs would finally be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Fort Cavazos Garrison Team is working closely with 1st Cavalry Division leadership to provide appropriate accommodations to impacted soldiers until successful repairs can be completed,\u201d the statement read at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2025\/02\/07\/broken-ac-at-fort-cavazos-leaves-soldiers-sweating\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP24340030362295.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Broken AC at Fort Cavazos leaves soldiers sweating<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A mechanical failure at the Texas base has left soldiers dealing with room temperatures in the 80s this week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hots&amp;Cots founder Rob Evans contacted Military Times last week, flagging further complaints about the AC units on the review app. He said the problems had affected 41 buildings, instead of the previously reported 10, claiming that the larger number was given to him by Fort Cavazos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reached for comment, Fort Cavazos did not confirm that 41 buildings were dealing with an AC unit problem. Instead, they confirmed that 41 facilities received chilled water for air conditioning, with 10 of those being barracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout February, Hots&amp;Cots posts continued to complain of excessive heat at the Texas military base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotscots.app\/share?id=b6652051\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> Feb. 15 showed a photo of a thermostat reading 80 degrees Fahrenheit, along with a caption that read, \u201cSTILL busted.\u201d Two separate posts uploaded on Feb. 26 similarly showed high room temperatures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotscots.app\/share?id=b5895744\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a> at 78 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotscots.app\/share?id=b4239478\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a> at 89 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going on 5-6 Weeks of NO AC, I\u2019m at my wits end,\u201d the latter post read. \u201cLeadership and garrison has ZERO care for single soldier Quality of Life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotscots.app\/share?id=b3579350\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> Feb. 20 even showed a room dipping into cold temperatures, with a photo of a 57.5 Fahrenheit thermometer reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When complaints first started flooding Hots&amp;Cots, soldiers accused the base of closing work orders immediately after they\u2019d submitted them, despite the issue persisting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no need for multiple open work orders for a problem that has already been identified,\u201d a Fort Cavazos spokesperson said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8812410.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8812410.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8812410.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8812410.jpg.jpg?resize=768,513 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8812410.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,684 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To better understand soldiers\u2019 living conditions, Gen. (Eric Franklin\/U.S. Army) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soldiers complain of lackluster response<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A soldier stationed at Fort Cavazos spoke to Military Times on Feb. 28 and described a lackluster response to the complaints about AC problems. The soldier spoke on the condition of anonymity, fearing potential retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve called them about four or five times periodically \u2018cause this AC thing has been an issue for the last five to six weeks,\u201d the soldier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldier also described a problem-solving system in which electronically filed complaints were immediately canceled after submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey refused to put in a work order because there were already work orders in,\u201d the soldier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the soldier\u2019s barracks room consistently reached high temperatures. On the evening of Feb. 26, the room was 84 degrees, making it difficult to sleep, the soldier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Directorate of Public Works advised the soldier to buy a portable AC unit to help cool down the room, without offering reassurance that any money spent on a unit would be reimbursed. The soldier declined out of principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2024\/05\/02\/barracks-problems-take-center-stage-at-military-readiness-hearing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fort-liberty-barracks-inspection.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Barracks problems take center stage at military readiness hearing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&#039;I want Marines focused on bullets on bad guys, not managing HVAC systems.&#039;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plug-in fans were dispersed to soldiers at the building\u2019s duty desk one day, the soldier said, but a fan wasn\u2019t enough to successfully combat the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of March 4, the soldier\u2019s room was hovering at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, creating doubts about whether the issue had been fully resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldier believes the base\u2019s broken AC units \u2014 and the response from leadership \u2014 were indicative of a more systemic problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe AC situation is a symptom of the bigger issue of DPW not actually being held accountable to get stuff done,\u201d the soldier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some rooms to undergo remediation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Directorate of Public Works was slow to respond to work orders, the soldier claimed, and sometimes the office didn\u2019t respond at all. past 12 years, referencing the makeover as an example of the base\u2019s commitment to its soldiers\u2019 wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 8, 2021, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortcavazosmediacenter.com\/on-post-housing-overhaul-420-million-allocated-to-hood-for-renovations-new-homes-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army announced an \u201con-post housing overhaul\u201d<\/a> worth $420 million that would replace 600 homes at Fort Cavazos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs of today, we are tracking 17 rooms in two permanent party barracks and one transient barrack with confirmed mold,\u201d Dosa said. \u201cThese rooms are under contract for remediation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dosa recommended soldiers submit a work order through ArMA, the Army Maintenance Activity platform, or call (254) 287-2113 to report any suspected mold in their
