How civilian non-profits can help you."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2020 Department of Veterans Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/benefits.va.gov\/TRANSITION\/docs\/2020_PSTAP.pdf\">study<\/a> on the Department of Defense\u2019s Transition Assistance Program, or TAP, the program responsible for preparing 250,000 service members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/transition\/tap.asp#:~:text=About%20250%2C000%20service%20members%20transition,from%20military%20to%20civilian%20life.\">every year<\/a> to leave the military, found that \u201cmany veterans did not understand the magnitude of the issues they might face when transitioning to civilian life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DoD-run TAP programs are congressionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/1975250\/changes-roll-out-for-transition-assistance-program\/\">mandated<\/a> for service members. Some programs, like SkillBridge, consistently get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/navy\/comments\/nvco4q\/questions_about_skillbridge_and_if_its_worth_it\/\">good reviews<\/a> from service members who know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/01\/06\/dod-skillbridge-the-best-military-transition-program-you-didnt-know-existed\/#:~:text=The%20DoD%20SkillBridge%20Program%20lets,more%20than%20500%20industry%20partners.\">well ahead of time<\/a> what future careers interest them.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/04\/half-a-million-veterans-re-entered-the-workforce-in-january\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20246719893742.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Half a million veterans re-entered the workforce in January<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The unemployment rate rose, but largely because many more veterans were seeking work last month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s hard to help people find a fulfilling career path, especially those service members who are unsure of their next step or who feel pigeon-holed into certain industries because of their technical skills. The amount of paperwork and mandatory training can make the separation process feel overwhelming, and burdensome, for anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where a robust network of civilian nonprofits comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans and separating active duty personnel have highlighted programs like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commitfoundation.org\/\">COMMIT Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shift.org\/\">Shift<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterati.com\/\">Veterati<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fourblock.org\/\">FourBlock<\/a> as hidden transition gems. Personal focus on what individual military members and vets want is central to these programs. Those who sign up can choose to be paired with mentors (often veterans themselves) who have found success in desired areas of industry and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the DoD-mandated TAP courses focus on bare-bones stuff like creating a LinkedIn profile, how to dress for success, and getting your VA benefits, then these nonprofits are the meat and potatoes \u2014 usually for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a solid career path in mind isn\u2019t a prerequisite \u2014 exploring options and career pivots is heavily encouraged. Programs also provide the added benefit of networking, a skill that\u2019s often loathed, but critical when entering the civilian workforce. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.linkedin.com\/2017\/6\/eighty-percent-of-professionals-consider-networking-important-to-career-success\">One study<\/a> showed that 70 percent of survey respondents were hired at a job where they already had a connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The groups aren\u2019t generally well-advertised and are normally passed by word of mouth between veterans and their still-transitioning buddies. Many groups are also open to military spouses looking to jump into a job search or make a career pivot. FourBlock will offer a free <a href=\"https:\/\/fourblock.org\/programs\/military-spouse-career-readiness-program\">10 week program<\/a> for spouses this February, and its course \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fourblock.org\/programs\/find-your-calling\">Find Your Calling<\/a>,\u201d aims to help service members answer the question \u201cwhat should I do next?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s so much advice indiscriminately being thrown at servicemembers. It can be hard to figure out what\u2019s best for the individual,\u201d said Sergio Padilla, a team member at <a href=\"https:\/\/breakline.org\/\">BreakLine<\/a>, a group that helps connect military members with information and mentorship on careers in the tech industry. \u201cI found BreakLine back in 2019 as a resource, five years after my transition. I made a lot of mistakes and had a tough transition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/08\/updating-your-military-resume-could-help-you-land-a-private-sector-job\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/resumeglassesC.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Updating your military resume could help you land a private sector job<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Many recruiters and hiring managers are unfamiliar with how military experiences offer preparation for private-sector jobs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army veteran Kyle Eberly jumped into a Deloitte <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/about-deloitte\/articles\/core-leadership-program.html\">veterans business program<\/a> and a Goldman Sachs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/careers\/professionals\/veterans-integration-program.html\">veterans internship<\/a> when he transitioned. He now runs a popular Instagram account, \u201cSitreps2Steercos\u201d, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitreps2steercos.com\/\">blog<\/a> devoted to helping service members transition into business education and the corporate world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI get a lot of transitioning military reaching out who don\u2019t understand just how complex the civilian labor market is,\u201d Eberly said. \u201cMany have no idea the sheer breadth and variety of high paying career options that leverage directly or indirectly their military experience, how the hiring process works, or how you get considered for different careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing on a transition early can also help people realize that simply being a veteran rarely bumps them to the front of the employment line. \u201cService members have a lot of misconceptions around how their military service and experience is valued in the civilian labor market,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s important for them to understand how competitive the hiring market is. The more they can learn from veterans who have transitioned successfully the better their outcomes will be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Marine still on active duty shared her experience with civilian transition groups. \u201cI\u2019ve met with four different mentors all from different industries through Veterati \u2014 they were all really helpful and nice, and explained their career paths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also met with two mentors at COMMIT and liked that it \u201cfocused on addressing gaps in imagination and confidence\u201d since so many veterans mistakenly assume their military skills earmark them only for careers in government or defense contracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She eventually signed up for a Shift cohort that met twice weekly over Zoom, and did the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shift.org\/career-accelerator\">Career Accelerator<\/a>\u201d program. \u201cI did Shift\u2019s Career Accelerator and soon had 2 small tech companies reach out to me about potentially doing a SkillBridge with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, she\u2019ll be starting an internship with one of those companies in a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/01\/like-action-and-adventure-the-diplomatic-security-service-is-hiring\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSS6.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Like action and adventure? The Diplomatic Security Service is hiring.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Bureau of Diplomatic Security \u2014 the arm of the U.S. Department of State tasked with securing diplomacy \u2014 is actively seeking veterans to fill overseas positions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some services to help transitioning vets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/today\/2022\/01\/story\/research-veterans-transition-to-civilian-life.html\">taper off<\/a> at the 3-year mark. That\u2019s not a lot of time, considering some studies show half of veterans will leave their first post-military job within 12 months of leaving the military, often spurred by <a href=\"https:\/\/econreview.berkeley.edu\/life-after-combat-veteran-underemployment\/\">underemployment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA361-1.html\">2020 RAND study<\/a> showed most veterans made less money in their first year of separation, compared to wages earned in their final year of active duty. Transition programs can help alleviate that wage gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers focused on veteran transitions reaffirmed the importance of supplemental transition programs last year <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/civil-rights\/541812-partnerships-needed-to-support-the-military-to-civilian-transition\">in an OpEd<\/a> \u2014 interview prep, resume writing, and individual mentorship can be crucial for post-military success. Unemployed study participants were twice as likely to find a job if they used civilian transition programs. Those programs also proved to boost promotions and raises for veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s an awareness campaign, to get service members to understand everything they will need to transition,\u201d said Abby Peterson, a Marine Corps veteran who now works for the COMMIT Foundation.
