But veteran entrepreneurs usually have a harder time getting financing than their nonveteran counterparts, a new study finds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans had to submit more applications to get approved for loans and other types of financing, and when they eventually were approved, it was often for less money than they were seeking, according to data from the latest annual Federal Reserve Banks\u2019 Small Business Credit Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why are vet entrepreneurs falling behind? The authors of a new report, \u201cVeteran Entrepreneurs and Capital Access,\u201d which was released by the Small Business Administration and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York this month, have a few theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans often apply for smaller loans of $100,000 or less, which can be harder to get from big banks. In addition, the military lifestyle can make it difficult to build a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2018\/04\/17\/why-your-credit-score-matters-and-how-troops-veterans-and-families-can-up-their-numbers\/\" target=_blank>credit history<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financing was one of the top challenges for Kathleen Ford, a retired Army senior nurse executive, when she was starting her business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scdatacom.net\/\" target=_blank>scDataCom<\/a>, a business security solutions company, with her daughter in Savannah, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well-educated former colonel with a retirement pension, personal savings and assets to use as collateral, Ford thought she represented the \u201cbest case scenario of military veterans seeking to start a business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite what I expected would make me an excellent candidate to invest in, I was disappointed to find that this was not the case at all. The banks were uninterested or unresponsive,\u201d she said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/11\/07\/how-marine-corps-training-prepared-this-veteran-for-a-career-making-childrens-toys\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CogniToys5-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How Marine Corps training prepared this veteran for a career making children\u2019s toys<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Toys created by Donald Coolidge&#039;s company have won multiple awards and made TIME magazine\u2019s \u201cBest Inventions of the Year\u201d list.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ford and her daughter wanted a business credit card and line of credit, but were turned down for the line of credit by their bank and were approved for a credit card with a low balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt took three years to get a new bank who offered us more satisfactory credit card terms, which gave us some wiggle room to resolve short term cash-flow concerns,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the fourth quarters of 2016 and 2017, forty-two percent of majority veteran-owned businesses applied for financing, on par with the 40 percent of nonveteran-owned businesses, according to the study. Yet 47 percent of businesses led by former service members applied three or more times in that timeframe, compared to 34 percent of those with majority nonveteran owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, 60 percent of veteran-owned businesses obtained less financing than they applied for, while the same was true for only 52 percent of nonveteran-owned businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at the Syracuse University <a href=\"http:\/\/ivmf.syracuse.edu\/\" target=_blank>Institute for Veterans and Military Families<\/a> said the results of the study jibe with what they\u2019ve heard from veteran entrepreneurs as well. They say that a lack of education about available resources could be part of the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans often \u2014 or any entrepreneur \u2014 might think, \u2018OK, I go to a bank because that\u2019s traditional funding.\u2019 And in reality there are a lot of other options,\u201d such as business competitions and <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/03\/foundation-announces-1-million-in-seed-capital-for-veteran-entreprenuers\/\" target=_blank>veteran-specific initiatives<\/a> to help vets start businesses, said <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/transition-tips\/entrepreneurship\/2018\/02\/17\/6-tips-to-start-your-business-from-scratch\/\" target=_blank>Misty Stutsman<\/a>, IVMF director of entrepreneurship and small business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other entrepreneurs may not realize the need to start small and build up some capital before they apply for a loan. Stutsman gave the example of a prospective gym owner hosting boot camp workouts to build some funds and a following before buying a building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that\u2019s why connecting to educational resource partners to say, \u2018Let\u2019s create a plan and a path forward\u2019\u201d is important, Stutsman said, \u201cso that you\u2019re continuously building a stronger business, so that you\u2019re \u2026 loan ready, and it can stand the test of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2018\/03\/22\/study-civilian-workforce-driving-vets-to-start-businesses\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-810666734-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Study: Civilian workforce driving vets to start businesses<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Whether in pursuit of more structure or less regimentation, veterans are starting their own businesses because they&#039;re not happy with the civilian workforce, a new study shows.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ford believes veterans are uniquely positioned to be successful entrepreneurs because of the skills, stamina and mental tenacity that were required of them in the military. She recommends that vet entrepreneurs check out resources such as the training and support offered by IVMF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have personally found these resources to be absolute game-changers for my business, and I don\u2019t think there is anything close to this available to our civilian counterparts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while access to capital is a challenge worth addressing, IVMF Researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/education\/2018\/01\/04\/5-business-reasons-for-schools-to-recruit-vets\/\" target=_blank>Rosalinda Maury<\/a> said it\u2019s not the only thing worth focusing on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s also the education, the training, the navigation, the network, the resources.
