This time by COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Veterans Affairs roll out of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/12\/01\/va-to-resume-medical-records-overhaul-in-early-2022-with-new-leadership-guiding-the-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">new $16 billion electronic health records system<\/a> is being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/07\/14\/va-scraps-rollout-schedule-of-controversial-new-electronic-medical-records-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">delayed again<\/a>, but this time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Covid-19<\/a> is the reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials on Friday announced that deployment of the new system to the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System, which was supposed to take place on March 5, will instead be pushed back almost two months to April 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said this time the reason for the move is not any concerns about the records system itself, but instead worries that staff absences and attendance limitations because of the recent nationwide surge in coronavirus cases will impede training time needed before the activation.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2021\/12\/01\/va-to-resume-medical-records-overhaul-in-early-2022-with-new-leadership-guiding-the-work\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1413724.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to resume medical records overhaul in early 2022, with new leadership guiding the work<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The program has been on hold since the summer after reports of problems with the inital rollout last year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we see the pandemic surge in the Columbus community, we need to support the medical professionals while they focus their attention on meeting the health care needs of their patients,\u201d said Dr. Terry Adirim, program executive director of the Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office, in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Health record] deployment activities must be weighed against community health and can be resumed when it is appropriate to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news is the latest setback for the electronic records rollout, which was paused last summer amid growing concerns that staff were unable to use the new system without potentially jeopardizing patient health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, VA leaders announced a new deployment schedule for the system \u2014 based on the Cerner Millennium software platform, the same one being used by Defense Department officials \u2014 that would start with Ohio facilities in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also unveiled a newly restructured office overseeing the work and new training plans to fix problems found with the initial deployment of the software in Washington state VA facilities in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials said they are hopeful that the two-month delay in the Ohio rollout will not affect the rest of the deployment schedule for the software. The VA medical center in Walla Walla, Wash., is still on track to begin later this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But officials admitted that if the latest surge in coronavirus cases lingers, it could disrupt other parts of the schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tentative timeline has the new records system being used in 12 VA medical centers by the end of 2022 and 21 more by the end of 2023. As of Thursday night, more than 72,000 department patients and staff had active cases of the virus, up 584 percent from the month before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System alone, about 209 employees are \u201cunable to work\u201d because of virus infections.
