{"id":51403,"date":"2020-08-26T20:24:54","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T20:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/26\/a-navy-seals-tips-for-surviving-a-hurricane\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:11:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:11:51","slug":"a-navy-seals-tips-for-surviving-a-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/08\/26\/a-navy-seals-tips-for-surviving-a-hurricane\/","title":{"rendered":"A Navy SEAL\u2019s tips for surviving a hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Category 4 Hurricane Laura barrels full-steam towards the Gulf Coast, residents are preparing to be battered by the system, which is expected bring 140 mile-per-hour winds and an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/weather\/hurricane\/os-ne-major-hurricane-laura-wednesday-update-20200826-7upb7zf6rvdono6yykm2pici7e-story.html\" target=_blank>unsurvivable<\/a>\u201d 20-foot surge of flooding Wednesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She comes on the heels of Tropical Storm Marco, which made landfall on Aug. 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coasts, however, are still deep in the midst of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, so more storms may still be yet to come. There are, however, simple steps coastal residents can take to maximize survivability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI always tell people that 90 percent of surviving a disaster scenario is preparation, is what you do before you hear that there is a hurricane coming,\u201d former Navy SEAL and survivalist podcaster Cade Courtley told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Prepare yourself<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThink about everything you would possibly need you and your family for five to six days,\u201d Courtley said. \u201cYou know you can go several weeks without food but you can only go a few days without water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conventional wisdom says that bottled water and canned food are wise purchases to make in advance of a storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are the obvious things, potable or clean drinking water, non perishable food,\u201d Courtley noted, \u201cbut other things people don\u2019t think about is maybe you\u2019re on a life-sustaining prescription medication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He advises that those in the path of a hurricane think outside the box about things that might be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGo to your doctor and say, \u2018Hey, can I get an extra couple weeks of this just to have?\u2019\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also suggested residents consider things like investing in a transistor radio so you can continue to get information about what is happening with storm, keeping cash on hand, and ensuring that valuable documents are safely stowed in an easily accessibly way that can\u2019t be damaged in case evacuation is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Evacuate when you\u2019re told<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cListen to the advice you\u2019re being given by your local officials,\u201d Courtley said. \u201cIf they say it\u2019s time to leave, you need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He advises keeping your car topped off with gas and having multiple evacuation routes planned, as bottle-neck situations can arise and become dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on the question of staying, Courtley notes, it\u2019s better to be safe than sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be any ego thing by any, by any means, so listen to the advice you\u2019re being given by the experts \u2014 they\u2019re not doing it just for fun, they\u2019re doing it for your safety,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you do stay, you are potentially compounding the problem for people who are going in to try and help. They\u2019ll have a much heavier load because there are that many more people they need to try and rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Treat it like a warzone<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hurricane, much like a war zone, can create dangerous situations that can prove deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust imagine, \u2018OK, I\u2019m in the middle of a field in a war zone, what might I need to try and survive through this?\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courtley also encouraged those caught in the midst of a storm to adopt a survivalist mindset of never giving up and always looking to get to the high ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Laura bears down, military efforts are underway to provide aid. Three thousand Louisiana and a thousand Texas National Guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/238500\/louisiana_texas_national_guard_prepare_for_hurricane_laura\" target=_blank>activated in preparation<\/a> for the storm\u2019s landfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force also made efforts to evacuate the 403rd Wing aircraft in advance of the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are moving aircraft as a precautionary measure ahead of these storms for two reasons,\u201d said Col. Jeffrey A. Van Dootingh, 403rd Wing vice commander said in a statement. \u201cFirst, to protect the aircraft from damage, and second, so we can continue to fly storm reconnaissance missions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth noting as well that Laura comes just two days before the 15th anniversary of Katrina, the Category 3 Gulf Coast system that infamously rocked Louisiana to its core on Aug. 28, 2005.
