The filing met a statute of limitations deadline and will be heard by an independent arbitrator, an NFLPA spokesman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, the NFL approved its national anthem policy at its owners meetings in Atlanta. (Marcio Jose Sanchez\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, then-49ers quarterback, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/2017\/03\/02\/report-nfl-quarterback-colin-kaepernick-will-stand-during-the-national-anthem-this-season\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Kaepernick<\/a> began protesting police brutality and social injustice by kneeling during the national anthem, and the demonstration spread to other players and teams. It became one of the most controversial and sensitive issues in the NFL, with players saying their messages last year were being misconstrued, while others \u2014 including President Donald Trump \u2014 called them unpatriotic. Trump even said NFL owners should fire any player who refused to stand during the anthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following those comments, more than 200 players protested during the anthem that weekend before the number of protesters dwindled as the season progressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"apester-media\" data-media-id=\"5b05b460a222d4898ec6ab08\" height=\"515\"><\/div><script async src=\"\/\/static.apester.com\/js\/sdk\/v2.0\/apester-javascript-sdk.min.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re here for a bigger platform,\u201d Raiders tight end Jared Cook said during the spring. \u201cWe\u2019re not just athletes. We\u2019re people that live this. It\u2019s people in our neighborhood, it\u2019s people that we grew up with, it\u2019s people that we know who are actually living through these circumstances. We want people to stand,\u201d Goodell said at the May meetings, when he dismissed concerns about the lack of union involvement by contending the league met with countless players over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been very sensitive on making sure that we give players choices,\u201d the commissioner added, \u201cbut we do believe that moment is an important moment and one that we are going to focus on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The league and the Players Coalition have been working in tandem on efforts to support player initiatives in the community and for a variety of social issues.
