{"id":54080,"date":"2018-04-25T21:22:19","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T21:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/25\/latest-allegations-against-va-nominee-jackson-drunken-driving-fake-prescriptions-abusive-leadership\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:37:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:37:27","slug":"latest-allegations-against-va-nominee-jackson-drunken-driving-fake-prescriptions-abusive-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/25\/latest-allegations-against-va-nominee-jackson-drunken-driving-fake-prescriptions-abusive-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest allegations against VA nominee Jackson: Drunken driving, fake prescriptions, abusive leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Hours after White House officials asserted that their pick for Veterans Affairs secretary has undergone \u201cmore vetting than most nominees,\u201d Senate Democrats released a list of 20 unresolved allegations against the would-be Cabinet official they say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/24\/trump-suggests-jackson-may-drop-out-of-va-secretary-confirmation-process\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover305916\">must be answered before a confirmation hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/24\/va-secretary-nomination-in-doubt-as-allegations-of-misbehavior-emerge\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover344828\">The charges include<\/a> accusations that White House physician Ronny Jackson, an active-duty Navy rear admiral, wrote false prescription orders for himself and others, undermined superiors and subordinates to cover his mistakes, and frequently drank while on duty, one time crashing a government vehicle while intoxicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/02\/white-house-doctor-could-face-the-most-contentious-va-confirmation-process-ever\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Jon Tester, D-Mont.<\/a>, said the accusations \u201chave raised serious concerns about Jackson\u2019s temperament and ethics, and cast doubt on his ability to lead the second largest agency in government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, committee officials postponed Jackson\u2019s scheduled confirmation hearing for Wednesday amid concerns that White House officials had not properly vetted a host of concerns with the 23-year military officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/25\/trumps-ronny-jackson-disaster-will-make-fixing-the-va-a-lot-harder\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18114777526986.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump\u2019s Ronny Jackson disaster will make fixing the VA a lot harder<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department, already dealing with years of negative attention, is now embroiled in a leadership scandal that again threatens its reputation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson was a surprise pick by President Donald Trump to replace former VA Secretary David Shulkin, who was fired over Twitter last month. Jackson has previously interviewed for the VA\u2019s top health job, but withdrew his name from the post and has had little direct work with VA operations during his military career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a press conference Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders noted that Jackson has served as physician to three presidents, which has prompted more scrutiny than nearly any other administration nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven his unique position of trust and responsibility, Dr. Jackson\u2019s background and character were evaluated during three different administrations,\u201d she said. \u201cDr. Jackson has had at least four independent background investigations conducted during his time at the White House, including an FBI investigation conducted as part of the standard nomination vetting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring each of those investigations, Dr. Jackson received unanimous praise from dozens of witnesses, and the investigations revealed no areas of concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Tester and other Senate Democrats have said nearly two dozen whistleblowers have come forward to them since Jackson\u2019s nomination, detailing a host of allegations. White House officials thus far have been unable or unwilling to respond to the charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 \u201cMultiple individuals cited the nickname \u2018Candyman\u2019 used by WH staff (for Jackson) because he would provide whatever prescriptions they sought without paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 \u201cJackson would have staff write scripts for each other to give to non-beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 \u201cMissing Percocet tabs once threw (the White House Military Office) into a panic. Tim Walz., D-Minn., and ranking member of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, to call for Jackson to withdraw his name from consideration for the top VA post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot only does Adm. Jackson lack the management experience necessary to successfully lead the 360,000-person, nearly $200 billion federal agency, it is apparent there are also serious questions about his character and job performance,\u201d he said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanders said that \u201cnone of those things have come up\u201d in previous background checks, and the White House is continuing to investigate it. But she also said senators should move forward with a confirmation hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A day earlier, Trump suggested the allegations were the product of Senate Democrats working to undermine his VA agenda and his presidency as a whole. But Senate Republicans have also expressed multiple concerns about Jackson\u2019s nomination, and Republican leaders signed off on the hearing postponement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also said he doesn\u2019t see why Jackson would stay in the confirmation process, but will leave the decision to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact is I wouldn\u2019t do it,\u201d Trump told reporters on Tuesday. \u201cWhat does he need it for? To be abused by a bunch of politicians that aren\u2019t thinking nicely about our country. I really don\u2019t think personally he should do it, but it\u2019s totally his decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also called Jackson \u201cone of the finest people I have met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earliest senators could hold a confirmation hearing would be the second week of May, but that timetable seems unlikely given the numerous questions surrounding Jackson\u2019s background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an brief interview Tuesday, Jackson told MSNBC that he is \u201clooking forward to the hearing so we can
